My guess would be Masonic, even without the triangle above the crown.. After all, triangular cut diamonds are few and far between. Whatever, it's a pretty amazing piece of bling.

I thought the french predated the civil war in the use of baloons for military purposes.

The first use of balloons for military purposes by the French was in the Seige of Paris in '70-'71. 66 balloons with a total of 102 passengers were sent out, delivering 2 1/2 million letters to the outside world. They also carried 400 carrier pigeons for return messages. Of these 400 only 8 returned.

2 balloons were lost at sea and 6 captured by the Germans, but the rest landed safely. The last flight was on 28 Jan, 1871, carrying news of the Armistice.

To kick things off here's one that just arrived. RAO and Kriegshilfe.

Just a guess, but maybe a commemorative cup for "The Year of the 3 Kaisers", 1888? Could you show the other 2 medallions? Might get a better date from the age of Willi the Twoth.

5 and 10 Fenigow "mules" were also minted using the Polish obverse and German reverse dies.

In 1917 a series of coins were minted in Hamburg for Poland in steel and zinc. The denominatios were 1 Fenig, 5, 10, and 20 Fenigow.

My favorite, te Armeekreuz or Kanonenkreuz from the Freedom War. Made from the cannon Boney didn't need anymore. (maybe it's my 'thing" about recycling)
