I guess I'll pick your brain a little, too
Here's 2/3 of my African collection:
First an ilkwa. Is that the same as an assegai?
It's 54 1/4 in. overall.
The exposed part of the head is 11 1/4.
The butt has a rudimentary knob
The wrapping appears to be some type of cord impregnate/coated with a varnishlike substance.
I have another spearhead about twice this size buried in one of my piles of detritus. If I manage to excavate it I'll post it.
Not Zulu, but African. I imagine it's either ceremonial or for the tourist trade, as the edges are blunt.

You're off to a good start I especially like the top right and bottom left and, of course, the one we "share"

Strangely no name entered upon the document but it bears evidence of being framed at some time,
pre WW1 in my humble opinion.
Kevin in Deva,

Maybe , but an interesting bayonet. It appears to be a M88/94, but with a French M66 Chassepot quillon. I couldn't find anything similar in Janzen, but some of the 70/71 "reparations" bayonets were used for parts while most were converted to fit the Gew.98.

The family name is apparently Wambach and there may be some paperwork available :jumping:

I got this in a Prussian 64/66 group. Is there any way of getting a roll of members in 1895? It's just possible that, by the process of elimination, I can put a name to it.
Just heard from the seller. Apparently the family name is Wambach :jumping:

and finally the back.
It looks like the safety pin is a replacement. The bar itself is a thick cardboard with a glazed white finish, even on the edges, so I don't think it's homemade.

The vets bar front
Any thoughts about the eagle? Never seen the like.

The Templars' medal
I'll post this in the Masonic forum too.

And now for the rest of the story.
The package arrived today and the mini's as much a gem as I'd hoped. Yes, Rick, it's one piece and seems to be hand formed. Maybe this weekend I can unlimber my camera and get a shot of the area where the button joins the bar.

Is that made in one piece, or is the button "sunk" into the "ribbons?"
What an incredibly fragile little jewel.
I broke another of my rules by posting before I have it in hand, but #50 is one piece.

Tom,
Congrats as well! I saw the other sale as well, but I only collect medal bars, so I wasn't interested in them that much. I am currious as to what your bar is for? I am not familiar with too many veterans medals....
Jason
The medals are on the wrong ribbons, but the first (second medal) is an unofficial unit vanity medal for the 7th Brandenburg Infantry Regiment. The round aluminum? one is for a Chicago expat vets' organization for a trip to Berlin and Leipzig. The black iron one is a Knights Templar jewel. Better scans when they arrive.

I forgot Rule # 1, SHOW THE BACK

And this one is on the way, and should be here tomorrow or Friday. The medals were arranged in the wrong order on the bar, so I have edited the photos so they are now correct (I will post actual updated photos when it arrives).
In everyones opinion, would you leave the damaged ribbon on the end alone, or would you somehow try to repair it?
Thanks!
Jason
So you're the one who got it I'm glad it's staying "in the family". Maybe someday we can reunite it with the rest of the group.
BTW, Jacquie, the seller, didn't want to break up the group, but the consignor insisted. I had a nice correspondence with her and she feels the way we do about medallic diaspora.

If original, the ribbon cross is extremely rare. When the EK was instituted there was a misreading of the criteria and the B?nderkreuz was issued as the EKI. The silver cross is a copy of the Landwehr cap badge.
Possibly, although I doubt it, private purchase for an officer. More likely a commemorative piece. Regardless, very nice :jumping:

The bar was out of my reach, but i did manage to snag this.
Another case of a split group, but maybe if one of us got the bar they can be reunited.

At least I got to see it Why do these always show up when I'm skint? :banger:

Yes, it's the maker mark, kag.
Kjell
Looks like the small stamp KO to me.

Interesting pieces. They do beg the question---Why?
IOt could be a case of supply and demand. X number of EKII's awarded, X-2 on hand, but a couple extra EKI's.

GREAT PIECE TOM!!!!!!
Did you see the 4 bar set on ebay? 4 campaign medals for before 1870-superb. The seller stuck it in coins.
"authenti-fi-cate"?
By the way folks, that's a quasi-inside joke - regarding another Gottleib who purportedly has made a few German items.
The above item is genuine and rare.
Aw, shuckins, I missed it. do you have the link or remember the seller?

I think Gottlieb mainly makes copies? Or is he sending you mails TELLING you to authentificate this piece?....... ;-)
Hey, a guy's gotta earn a living :cheeky:

When I opened the package what to my wondering eyes should appear but this:
I don't think we have to wonder who the maker was.
