is it for recognising the ones that fought or where stationed somewhere, or perhaps

I decided not to buy a St. Stephen order.

The seller was offering a commander cross, I asked him if it was real gold, but received no reply on my question (already placed a bid just viewing the pictures).

I was outbidded.

Then the seller offered me one as well for my bid, as he had more of them.

It also wasn't real gold but metal with a gold layer on it.

I found it quite strange that he had multiple and just offered them to the other bidders as well so I decided not to buy it.

The seller states it is the medal: MERITE FRANCAIS OUTRE MER.

I've tried to look it up on the internet but can't find any information or pictures, only the name showed up.

thank you for your answer, it sure is a great help, I finally know what it is, and it sounds very interesting.

I might go collect some masonic jewels, but I recon I should first have a good look around on what to look for.

For example I think this looks interesting, but is there more to it then just as I read that it is for an assistant?

is it special/does it have a story, or from a certain freemasonry group, what would be good prices for such items etc.?

As I try to state with this example, I have no idea what would be good items and what not to buy, perhaps I should learn more about the history of freemasonry instead of just start buying on eBay, just like what I do now, collecting medals, you can't just start buying, not knowing what it is.

I came across this silver medal in the order of Leopold II and I'm wondering what the bird on the ribbon is, the seller stated it is an airforce emblem, meaning the receiver got it for good service in the airforce.

well I have a less intellectual question perhaps, but I'm always curious and want to learn more about military items/decorations therefore I couldn't resist asking the question.

what are masonic items? I see it quite a lot here and on eBay, but still can't make a specific definition for it.

it looks like items from a few century's ago, then again sometimes not, some have quite some decorative parts, others not, so what makes an item masonic?

I've looked here but can't find a definition.

Who can explain what a masonic item is?

can anybody help me with information on the Austro-Hungarian order of St. Stephan (K?niglich Ungarischer Orden des Heiligen Stephan) created in 1764 and disbanned in 1918.

does anybody know the sizes of this order, what is the size of a normal knight medal, a commander and a grand cross, or are they all the same?

Actually it probably isn't that bad for me if he moves to Belgium, because I live near the Belgian border,now I have to travel over 100 kilometers to go to the shop so I order most of it on his site, if he moves to Belgium it probably is closer to my city and up here there is a good public transport conection to belgium, which I didn't have when he was in Leiden.

I bought this frame with his medals and a picture, don't have it yet, I expect it in 1-1,5 weeks.

Appart from not having it yet, I also haven't got a camera because I borrowed it to someone going on a holiday, so no better pictures at the moment.

no frontbars visable on the ribbon of the commemorative 1914-1918 medal, but looking at the medals he got he was in service quite some time during the war.

viewing the picture, it looks like he has a NCO rank emblem on his arm sleeve, which makes the Sergeant-Major rank possible.

I guess it must be him as there are no other people with this name in the guldenboeken and the information seems quite the same.

He received the following medals:

-croix de guerre with lion on the ribbon

-commemorative medal of the 1914-1918 campaign

-Yser medal

-defence of Luik/Liege medal

-victory medal

-firecross (vuurkruis)

-honorary medal for scouts, with star on the ribbon

-military decoration

-honorary medal of veterans FNC

-commemorative medal of the 100 anniversary of national independance

any information about this man is very welcome, his date of birth, death, where he lived, which battles he fought, dates of receiving medals etc.

I have these 2 Belgian medals.

they where awarded after the war.

1 medal is awarded in the name of the city:La Nivelles, to soldier: E.Barreau

The second is also a comemorative medal for the 1st World War

In my opinion both non official medals, but I might be wrong.

Who can tell more about these medals or about the soldier it was awarded to?(perhaps he has more awards)

jacky, could you please find out who the awards are from, I bought these a year ago with the promiss I would get the name soon, it is now more then a year ago, I think I have the right to know, escpecially for the price I paid for them.

in 1900 it was created with this monogram as an award in Congo, in 1908 it was also adapted in the belgian order system and the monogram became a lion instead of a shield?
