well, since this is an area I tend to watch very closely.
I know that I am reguarly biding against several collectors
who will pay anything to win if they decide they want it
most of them only bid snipe, and only in the last 10 minutes
I have watched what happens when 2 or more set
outrageous bids planning on winning - even common items
fortunately this type of collector tends to go away after a while
unfortunately someone usually comes to take their place

since you can't ID them
I'd still be glad to make them a home
mongrels thouh they be

might I add a Wurtemburg Olga order
Wurttemb...ga_O
nice topic
thanks

it is a prussian red cross 3rd class - 2nd class would have an enameled cross
saschaw
you post a wonderful example,
but it appears to be missing 2 medals - a prussian red cross
and whatever went with the blue ribbon

I would think it more likely to be this
very very common for ww1 era bavarian red cross
but then again it could be several others, among which
the previous or perhaps this one

wonderful news,
I look forward in hope
that it will have many interesting things
I've dreamed of flying to europe for auctions
but I'm afraid that will always be just a dream
so I'm thankful for the cyber commute

well, if you put in a request for a catalog
you'll be taken to a link where for 20 euro
you can buy one - I can not however
find any link for a pdf version of the catalog
they did send me a postcard for
the march auction
I do not know if this means a catalog
will eventually arrive
as nice as printed catalogs are
especially now that so many are in color
I'd rather not purchase them
there is only so much storage I have,
but storage for pdf's - that's different

please leave it alone,
first - it will destroy the value
second - it will destroy its history
why do you want to do it?
considerable poilishing will be necessary in any type of blung
hot bluing is more durable
it is not something to do yourself
not that you can't do it
but what is needed to do it right
is not something one does for a single blade
those who can do it, can vary the blue by which chemicals are in it
do it yourself blue, is almost always a cold blue
for it to work well, the metal must be VERY clean
there are tricks that can help to match, patch
a worn spot on a blued item and it can look good
but anyone who knows will be able to tell
it has been monkeyed with

Nimmergut's OEK is meant to be used with
his massive 4 volume work
and in vol 3 you will find black & white photos
of the medals in question
because the book is in print
I am reluctant to make or post scans of them
and for anyone who is interested in imperial german medals
it is a set of books very much worth having.

with regard to the second one
as far as nimmergut [4 vol not OEK]] goes
its not in there, so its not Mecklenberg
well, not official at least
and does have the look of fantasy
the first one,
all I can say is
I thought it was worth 3 euro
just as a puzzle of is it real
and if so what is it -
but since it went for 5
I didn't worry about it any more
but with postage costs rising
I'm not certain how often
I'll bid on such things
oh for the olden days when their were plenty
of medals in the market, and only a few were "bad"

I always like to see red cross,
would however advise
you have more missing than you imagine
I've seen 6 different corporate awards
and the gilt come in highlights only and all gilt
and I've seen them on regular, special, & life ribbons
and then there are all the things I have not yet seen
plenty of variations as well
one favorite is in the types of suspensions
plenty of collecting oppertunities await

perhaps you could clarify which medal you are asking about,
the first silver one,
or the second,
I've seen the first one before
it wasn't my area, but I am subject to temptation
I don't know what it was, didn't win it,
but I'm fairly certain it is not Mecklenberg
at least is it not in Nimmergut's big work vol 2

If I could second the idea of preservation
of historic photographs -
it is fine to save the images,
but it is worth saving historic paper
these are often lost
so few survive

I know there is a nice book covering Red Cross medals and badges,
text is Itallian, rummors of a revised english language eddition...
and would suspect there are other similar badge books
though I can't name them...
some of it may be covered in their journals
usually prices climb after a book has been released
and prices have been rising on Italian lines

yes there are similarities
to the red cross service medal
except -
the arc ribbon uses stripes
of equal width - 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
are what I have seen
and the only device on the medal
may be a bar for overseas service
which is what it says
and -
while there are red cross ribbon bars
this is not a medal for which I have ever seen
or heard of a bar being used
my scanner is down so I can't scan a complete set,
sorry

more to the point
it was possible to buy
ground dug bullets from the battlefield
all you had to do it match it to your gun
the collector went through several thousand
to find the match
I almost bought the henry myself
but the stock had been cut down
the gun was beat up
and brass tacks had been added
that was enough to know it was an indian owned gun
but not enough to tell me much more

your last one must be Red Cross
the design, in different colors
is also used by the Romanian Red Cross
also for public health of some sort
I've haddd the impression that
there were soviet approved designs
which are used in many of the satelites

its a good question
the answer is not found on OMSA website
so I posted the question in their forum
let see if someone knows

If I'm right, I knew this collector well,
he had been a bank president,
and he loved research,
he bought a henry rifle from a friend
did balstics test on it against
bullets found at the Custer battle site
and was able to place it there as an Indian weapon

do DDR Red Cross

I'm no expert
but why would the Hindenberg
preceed the Red Eagle -
that doesn't seem right...

you want a very good museum archivist
who specializes in paper
they can do incredible things,
a good museum can point you to one,
a good archivist will have credentials,
I would suggest you read a little on the
subject so you can ask proper questions,
there is good reading material online.
