polyester is not the problem,
it is the cardboard/paper the mounts are made of
these are not acid free

and this is the front
which, if the dealer was correct is not a copy
[i unfortunately have bought those too]

I believe these are pix of the issue 1st class badge
the back, which has no marks
it is from my collection

I knew of Nimmergut's figures, but I also knew there were other figures used, an was hoping to learn which is the definitive word. or perhaps even a medal roll. thanks

how many of the 1st class were awarded?
thanks

I wouldn't give up my HP for anything
[not even for windows xp]

while there can be danger of course from the light,
probably the greatest danger is just in the handling
of the document - be certain to wear gloves.

I'd like to add one more thing
there are some types of old paper
that will disentegrate all by themselves
as they were made by an acid process
[old newsprint, for example]
conservators can do things
to preserve even these sorts of doccuments -
but is not something to do yourself
and it is not inexpensive
there are a number of US government pdf's
that cover conservation of a wide variety of materials
and many museum's will offer advise and assistance
and have handbooks of archival practises

what ever kind of folder make certain they are archival
mylar is archival - pvc is not
there are also acid free file folders
i've been using mylar sheet protectors
0 -
The standard ones are PVC
polyvinyl cloride
they are not archival
the ones I was looking for are
mylar, they are archival.
why keep them is something?
to protect from the oil on your fingers
the alternative is to wear gloves

I've run out of plastic medal envelopes
and the website I ordered them
from last time is out of business
for those of you who don't use them
they do slow tarnishing
and they keep ribbons nice
problem is there are the good ones
that have archival properties
and the bad ones that in time
promote corrosion [different kind of plastic]
I can't remember the differencce
and I can't seem to find a source in the USA
need to order a couple hundred
thanks

I had my suspicions
but when you can't read arabic
sometimes you take chances
anyway here is something more interesting
Libyan Red Crescent
not certain what class it is
or what sort of ribbon it should hang from
0 -
OK we'll try again
it was there before
0 -
I've been told that this is a badge of
the Algerian Red Crescent,
I'm not certain, and hope someone
who can read arabic can tell me what it says.
thanks.

what's the length?
looks very much like heavy cavalry type
used during US civil war
which hung from horse saddle

Matboard is the heavy cardboard
used in mats for pictures
[decorative cardboard frame
that spaces the picture from the glass]
its found at frame shops and art supply stores
comes in colors, and some types are
acid free and buffered for archival display
you would want the acid free
you would also want acid free for framing documents
and acid free folders for storing historic doccuments
most felt is acid based, which is why it is not
a good archival medium.

I suppose if you wanted to use cardboard
acid free matboard would be a much better choice
also foamcore is good
see an arts supply store for either

very nice -
you'll also want to look for the lapel minature
that goes along with it - unless that's the men's award...
round button about 5/8"
same design

you are correct this is the full sized medal
I think it looks rather nice on its ribbon
perhaps medical personel did not feel a need
to be weighed down with excess iron

how do you tell the original issue
from the reproductions?
I know originals have rivets on the back
but I can't remember the details
0 -
I don't have many 5 sided ribbons
but none of mine have metal suspensions
are these things is use before ww2?
0 -
I believe 2 manufacturers of the official type
Leisek & Kremnice and this is the Kremnice
as it has the designer name
0 -
sure, lets see if I can
I'll also mention map drawers or flat files
as another alternative, good especialy for cased medals
same thing arcitechs used before computers
smaller ones sometimes used by artists
rather heavy, and I'm still looking for some localy
museums also have wonderful cases
but I have yet to find them afforably

Can scanning old documents be harmful?

while it is generally safe to copy things printed prior to 1929, after that date things change, and may be protected. It is not legal to copy a whole copyrighted book for personal use EVER. The fair use provision has ALWAYS been for sections and educational use - copying and giving to others violates this - basically you've got to do it yourself, for yourself.
As for government publications, certainly not all are public domain.
