In the spring of 2005, Estonia organised in co-operation with the UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations, MTC (Military Training Cell) course in Tallinn, the goal of which was the training of instructors for in-mission training of UN peacekeeping missions.

Dear Gentlemen,

Here is a new topic talking about the modern Estonian military badges. You can see the badges which are revived after the almost 60 years of Soviet and German occupations. Some of them look like the 1920-40 badges, some others have a modern design. Of course the quality of the badges is not so good as it was in 1920-40 but good enough to like them:).

I would be very glad if anybody can add information to this topic and I will answer on your questions with a great pleasure.

As I said I am not an expert of Imp. Rus. aviation badges but I see fakes of Imp.and Sov. Russian high end badges very often because all of my life is dedicated to badges and medals/orders and I live in this region.

Jewelers from Latvia and Ukraine make perfect copies using silver and gold and best enamels.

I do not speak about poor copies from eBay.

Let`s say , this is my gut feeling which says the badges are not good. I may be wrong but I think I am not.

This is a badge of the Sakala Single Infantry Battalion.

Col. Jakobsen was a commander of the battalion in 1921-24.

Sorry, but I don`t think these are originals. The pilot-observer badge is a highly faked item and particular badge looks like the fake items I see constantly on the collector meetings. The caucasian flight group badge is unknown to me but it has similar look to the observer badge so I think both of them are fakes.

Original aviation badges will cost thousands of dollars and it`s allmost impossible to find them.

I am not an expert of Imperial Russian aviation badges but...

There is a stylized Imperial Russian eagle on the swastika. So it must be related to Russia somehow.

The use of swastika was not unusual in old Russia. You can see it even on the bank-notes of 1917 issue.

Swastika was used by boyscouts of many countries as one of the highest awards, so maybe it`s an award of the Russian boyscouts in exile.

What is the significance of the suspension device and setup of the two badges in post #1 and 2? Is there some historical (Baltic) link to this style? It is very unusual.

I like the use of what is almost medievel symbology, does this also have a cultural link? Or is it just "tuff lookin".

The significance of the suspension device is to avoid a rotation of the badge on the uniform. These badges have screw fastenings. You can see on one of my photos how the badge with the suspension device fastens to the uniform. Of course not only practical purposes were primary- the badges look better too.

Many of the Estonian military badges use an image of Nordic Eagle which comes from Estonian national epic.

The Estonian traditions of order are among the oldest ones in Europe reaching back to 1202 when the Order of the Brethren of the Sword was established.

So we can see German influences and also Russian because in 1710 (till 1918) Estonia was subordinated to the rule of the Russian Emperor.

You can see medieval coats of arms of the towns on the badges too.

Here is a badge of the 6th independent infantry batallion. Numbered on the back No.21

You can see a Nordic Eagle holding medieval coats of arms of Parnu county and Parnu city.

So you don`t see any problem if I will post a poster showing Hitler and banner with swastika as May Day greetings.

You know that May Day was seen as a holiday in nazi Germany too.

I can`t see any problem if this poster will be posted as a historical item. It`s nice and interesting but it was posted as an ideologial item (which is calling to the victory of the communism).

Is this a joke? Communism is going to be proclaimed as ideology against humanity. Stalin and Lenin both were amongst the utmost criminals. As much as I understand this forum must be free of ideology ( and NOT only german nazi but soviet also). Am I wrong?
