The new medal will be a permanent replacement to the different medals bestowed in the last 2 years.
This one (sharing it's ribbon with the new award) was for the 2012 "Caucasus Exercise"
This one was for the Russian-Belarusse Joint Strategic Exercise "West 2013"

I think the minister bought shares in the mint...

The pic in post #6 darn near made me fall out of my chair...
The tsar in a German uniform and the kayser in a Russian uniform... Dang!

Hi,
definately not because of lack of interest, more because only a tiny fraction of our members have the skills needed to add anything.
My hat off to both of youse and my undying jealousy at your talents!!
I second what Chris said, every word of it.
We just stop by to admire your great work.

Fascinating stuff! I had no idea this award even existed.

It's already quite exceptional to receive a medal for service within our own national borders. Everything is about deployed international ops...

The medal hangs from the wrong ribbon. It is also in unsilvered tombac with an enameled center leading me to believe it might be a "souvenir" piece or unofficial variant.
This is an award of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia, it was established on 27 December 1995 by ministerial order 885. It is the Medal "Participant in emergency humanitarian operations".
Awarded to individuals or organisations for their involvement in humanitarian relief operations and contributions to prevention and to the organization of such future operations as well as for dedication and courage.
Oddly enough, (possibly due to the number of foreign recipients?) the medal hangs from a straight mount contrary to all other ministerial awards that hang from the standard Russian pentagonal mount.
NOTE: Ministerial order 620 dated 6 december 2010 completely refurbished ministerial awards, this particular medal was not included in the new charts and is no longer on the ministerial web site leading me to believe it is possibly no longer awarded. That would potentially explain the weird piece in the original post.

They could have the number coined/stamped/molded directly onto the clasp. The cost would be minimal.
Jean-Paul is quite right IMHO... 2 full years spent near the North Pole away from loved ones and in quite austere conditions should be better recognized. A clasp with "ALERT - 4" would be soooooo simple to produce.

This is art of the calibre that could and should be in any collection of war art whether it is in a private collection, such as mine, or in a museum where the public can not only marvel at the skill of the artist but also reflect on the deeds of those the piece commemorates.
Steves dedicated work and extraordinary talent honours the men and women of all branches of the military and conflicts regardless of their nationality.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion and there is always merit in any opinion, this is mine.
Regards
Brian

I would've never guessed. First time I see this award.
He must've truly valued this particular award, wearing it in lieu of other French gongs.

Bison, non... Il veut dire la médaille qui pend du ruban jaune dans la seconde photo...

This old warrior makes a striking picture.
He sure does! He simultaneously personifies "valour", "dignity" and "humility"... Quite a feat in itself wouldn't agree?!

Even after an exhaustive web search... I still couldn't find a photo of the esteemed general wearing "ALL" of his gongs... He doesn't even bother to pin on his Croix du combattant... Hmmmmm... Any particular reason why he's never seen wearing his numerous campaign medals?

Here's the medal in the manufacturer's presentation etui.

This one is the decoration "For Distinction", awarded for the same reasons as the decoration "For Merit" but to sailors and petty officers.

A few memorable quotes... (I'm still laughing)
"embedded up to their jocks in some seriously deep "
"this tsunami of gun-toting humanity"
"raging psychotic hellhole of ass-sucking carnage"
"the kind of woman who was going to flip her and go Princess Vespa on hordes of AK-47 toting maniacs"
"turn the entire plane into a smoking crater of suck"
"before a Viet Minh shell fragged it back to the Cretaceous Period (or whichever geological Era is responsible for airplanes)"

I think the lady is fascinating! I loved reading her story... But must admit at laughing out loud at the author's writing style... Was this a junior high school project?
Eisenhower's intro is quite poignant and really set's the tone though!

That could have sparked WW3...
Yup... The Chinese would've gone totally ballistic over the use of tactical nukes so close to their borders. The dominoes would've potentially fallen pretty quickly...
