It is possible as an engraved medal some one has bogged the spelling up. As any skirt wearer knows the name can be spelt in 2 equally common ways Stuart and Stewart. Could be the engraver had had a few Old Poultneys and got the wrong spelling check Stewart

Looks more like a lapel badge to me but I would agree with musician but not sure whether civil or military.

Emmanuel,
I remember Stella very well (and I am not talking of the Artois branch of the family). The attribution he gave is not unreasonable. I think it is a geographical society award but without portuguese governmental authority. But Portugal is awash with various private awards.

Does the South African Mint Manufacture them? If so it might be worth contacting them.

By the way congratulations with the rugby you showed real hunger and resolve, a group of paraplegic warthogs could have put in a better and more impassioned performance than the England XV

Well i hope the book is of some substance as a lot of these local police histories are little better than small museum guidebooks which usually provide little new knowledge

What a shame merchanr groups can sometime entail 50+ years service from early teens to sometimes late 60s early 70s, ships cooks were noted for their longevity (unlike those who patook of their food) when they became unfit for further service
Do you have details of the other medals. I am in hospital at present but I may have access to the book in the next couple of months.

I like groups to old merchant Salts he must have been over 60 when he teceived his great war mercantile marine and late teens /early 20s when he got the sea gallantry. He would have been able to spin many a good yarn in the port bars. 40+ years service amazing.

Very nice group with South African, China and WW1 service.
All citations are published in Robert Scarlett "The sea gallantry medal" ISBN9780953920785.

Maybe the reason for the award was such that he felt that if was well deseved and above disputes. Presumably he must have got permission to wear via the top brass.

Those are Byrd's medals. As you can clearly see it is a black widow. You are right it was the 1988 ele tion following the retirement of the less smarter actor in bedtime for Bonzo (I believe Bonzo was the intended nominee for the 1980 election but was sidestepped due to a heavy 5oclock shadow which cost Nixon dear in 1960)

No I suspect he lost his original down a penguin's gullet or his faithful husky Igloo devoured it during the 1940 expidition. Thus an official replacement. It was definitely like the black widow illustrated and while I may be far from perfect. Those who know me well and my work colleagues will confirm that I have an elephantine memory. By the buy the sale which took place on US Election day 1990. Had the illustration of Group captain Peter Townsend scrambling during the battle of Britain. The inside cover has Igloo being somewhat amorous with Byrd's trouserleg.

Thank you so much. I have handled the type 2 with Minerva.
I think you deserve a Skanderbeg order for that
All the best

The monarchs head is always the side displayed going back to the Waterloo medal

Timo if we assume the second is the Dannebrog then the third would be the commemorative for the golden wedding of Christian IX 1892. It would make sense of the order. Therefore a Danish volunteer for the Boer war and there were several foreign volunteers in the British army.

Yes I am sure he is. Until WW1 he was the Ottoman Empire's representative in Australia. He also had friends in very high places. The Russo-Turkish war of 1878-79 was widely reported in Britain and the Empire and at the time the Turks were the good guys and the Russians very much to quote Ronnie Regan " the evil empire" Ryan's autobiography shows his proud he was of his role in the war and his frequently mentioned admiration for the unbelievable courage of the common Turkish soldier: this he wore his Turkish honourz with great pride
