1. Januar 1916
Die erste Nacht im neuen
Jahre nicht besonders
geschlafen wegen des ???
ten Lagers u. der Kälte.
Dachte noch für mich, wie
ganz anders war doch
der letzte Abend, Sylvester
im Jahre 1915 gegen vor-
ges Jahr. Auch für mei-
ne Angehörigen, beson-
ders für mein liebes
Frauchen war gewiss
dieses Sylvester gegen
voriges Jahr wie Tag
und Nacht.
Das Aufstehen u. Ankleiden
??(*) ging heute allerdings
besser u. schneller als im
vorrigen Jahr. Hatte ich
aus besonderen Gründen
meine ganze Kleidung
einschließlich Stiefel
u. Sporen gestern abend
anbehalten und kei-
ne Wasch ??(*) Gelegenheit.
Doch ein Soldaten achtet so
etwas nicht u. freut
sich, daß er noch leben
darf.
Um 7:30 trat die Komp.
an, um beim Tag werden
mit dem Auswerfen
einiger Graben recht-
winkelig zur Feuerstel-
lung anfangen zu können
Sollte hierdurch ein
Versaufen der neuen
gelegten Unterstände
vermieden werden.
Ein hübsche Beschäftigung
am Neujahrsfest!
Aber das schadet nichts,
es schadet gar nichts.
es schadet absolut
nichts. - Was man
aus Liebe tut, das
geht noch einmal
so gut!
Und bei unser Arbeit
heute am Neujahrstage
ging es recht feucht zu.
Man war nämlich froh
daß der Dreck u. Wasser
nicht von oben in die
Stiefel lief.
(*) maybe "pp" for "etc. pp" (et cetera)!?

This is part of a tragic little tail... two brothers in the same unit, killed on the same day....
but which unit?
As they came from Constanz, I assume Baden 114?
Chris,
maybe the 6. Badisches Infanterie-Regiment Kaiser Friedrich III. Nr.114 from Konstanz!?
Best regards,
Jens

.... Does it describe the actions that earned them the award?

Chris,
I think it's the silver merite cross of Bulgaria!??? Maybe like this one:
At first I was thinking this one (but the ribbon don't match): Ehrenkreuz (Allgemeines Ehrenzeichen) mit Schwertern 1876
For the rest we need close-ups!
The regiment is (maybe) the 7. Thüringische Inf.-Regt. Nr.96 IR 96 – GenWiki
Is there a "96" on the shoulderboards!?
Best regards,
Jens

oops... tahnks; I will correct that the next update....
There is a history of the 173rd on Ebay... why is it never the one you REALLY need for sale!!!!!
... you are looking for the IR174 history - I've got one!

Chris,
nice & thanks! But here is a very small mistake or mistype: The Soldier's Burden
"Hawickhorst was a reserve officer in Infanterie-Regiment (1. Lothringisches) Nr. 174."
... it's the 10. Lothringisches Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 174 !
Best regards,
Jens

Jens,
Nice piece of paper! Just for the record, do you know the name of the Major who signed it? Is it "von Huth"?
Thanks,
Chip
Chip,
thanks! And yes - it's Friedrich Franz von Huth: Friedrich Franz von Huth – Wikipedia
Best regards,
Jens
Hi,
he probably figured everyone who got a medal from the kaiser got one. As it was up the unit to print the info, he was just a lucky boy that they personalised them.
Best
Chris
Chris, sure - maybe hundreds of soldiers (during this military review) was awarded!

Please excuse my ignorance but could we have a translation of this document to help explain its significance
Regards Simon
Simon, sure I try it! Hopefully my Kraut-to-English-translation is understandable!?
Cheers
Jens

Hello & Thanks!
Jens
Interesting document indeed. Do you have anything else of the awardee?
ostprussenmann
... only the document and the Iron-cross 2. class (stamped: *M*).
Very nice indeed!
Its things like this that make WW! docs soooooo much more intereting than the WW2 or 1870 ones!
... exactly!
Best regards,
Jens
p.s.: I have a picture from this parade:
Kaiserparade am 14. Dezember 1916 bei Mörchingen/Lothringen Kaiser besucht die 34. Inf.-Div.. Im Vorbeimarsch das Königs-Infanterie-Regiment Nr.145.
Der Kaiser trägt am linken Arm das Trauerband aus Anlaß des Todes von Kaiser Franz Joseph von Österreich (†21. Nov. 1916).

Hi,
a small piece of paper, but with an interesting text:
"Von Seiner Majestät dem Kaiser und König ist dem
Musketier Kiewen der 3. Komp., Königs-Infanterie Regment No.145
bei der Truppenschau am 14. Dezember 1916
das Eiserne Kreuz II. Klasse
persönlich verliehen worden
Im Felde, den 15. Dezember 1916"
Cheers

... My impression of the engraving is that it reads to an infantry regt.
...
Hello Erickn,
that's a very nice "KO" iron-cross from the same lieutenant - great!!!
And yes - the engraving means: Inftr. Regt. 56
Best regards,
Jens

... I think we solved the "puzzle", it's not a "FR" - it's an "IR", in the old german Kurrent-Script!
The letter "i" looks like a "F" : Deutsche Kurrentschrift – Wikipedia
... so the infantry-regiment is correct: IR 56 – GenWiki
Maybe you will find the Reserve-Officer in the regimental-history:
Dr. phil. Martin Schultz: "Das Infanterie- Regiment Vogel von Falckenstein (7.Westfälisches) Nr.56 im Großen Kriege 1914/18". 1926 Berlin, Albrecht Blau Verlag, 328 Seiten.
Best regards,
Jens

....... So I presume the unit mark "F.R. 56" would be for the Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 56 III Bataillon.
Hi John,
I've never read a "F. R. 56" for an Infantry-Regiment (also not for the third (Füsilier)-Bataillon)!
Can we see the backside of the EK1 !? Best regards,
Jens

Sorry, I should have asked where I can purchase either of these books. I hope my current restricted status does not prevent anyone from giving me suggestions.
Thanks.
Greg Gertz
Hello Greg,
you can buy the book here: Das Königlich-Preußische Schleswig-Holsteinische Dragoner-Regiment Nr. 13 von seiner Gründung bis zum Ende des Weltkrieges. Mit Hilfe von amtlichen Quellen, Kriegsbriefen und Kriegserinnerungen bearbeitet. (Dragoner) Schmolle, Friedrich un
... maybe there are some prewar photos inside??? But I think you didn't find something about you Grandfather inside the book!?
Here you will find some informations about the regiment: DR 13 – GenWiki
Best regards,
Jens
