    1. What is interesting is that the list was published 9 years after the end of WW II.The introduction gives credit to the wife of the late Generalstabschef of the Luftwaffe, General Koller. She had it on microfilm and gave it freely to the archivars.

The son of General Koller, Roland Koller was my classroom neighbour at the LuitpoldGymnasium in Munich in 1952 and 1953. I was at the Koller Home occasionally. Roland Koller later became Polizeipr?disent of M?nchen and is the Minister of the Interior in Lower Saxony.

    2. With the information that there were only two ships from the Imperial Navy in Messina (Hertha and Victoria Louise), Rick identified him as:

      Wilhelm Peters

      born Kiel 13 May 1888

Seekadett 1.4.08 (served on Victoria Louise)

      F?hnrich zS

      Lt zS 27.9.11 L5l

      Olt zS 19.9.14 A5a

      KaptLt zS 18.8.18 H

      KorvKapt zS (E) 1.10.34 #7

      Fregattenkapit?n (E) 1.10.1939 #6

During WW1 he served as a Watch Officer on torpedo boats V156, V158, V67, S32, and S60 of the 12th half-Flotille/VI Flotille until October 1917. Then he went to Uboat School and was commandant there of the old training submarine "U-A" until April 1918, ending the war as an instructor there. Listed in the 1918 RL with EK1 and OK1. Went aD 30.7.20.

Recalled to the Navy in the 1930s.

      1937 Marine Werft Wilhelmshaven

1938-1941 WBK Frankfurt/M. (that's probably where he got his South-German style ribbon bar with the Otto Schickle eagles), Torpedoschule M?rwik, Hafenkomdt. Le Treport and Dieppe

Died 3 March 1941 of a heart attack "at the front" as Fregattenkapit?n.

Wonderful medals and ribbons. It is amazing what thorough research on this website can produce. But please allow me to make a small remark as to the ranks. There is no zur See with a Kapit?nleutnant or a Korvettenkapit?n. The only addon with zS is with Leutnant, Oberleutnant and Kapit?n. Dont want to be picky, just add the last percent to the hundred for these comments

      regards

    3. Too dark to be sure, but I guess there are no maker markings ? I'd be fairly sure this badge is by B H Mayer of Pforzheim.

Hello, yes you are right, absolutely no markings I include a picture of Z26 sinking in March 1942 after battling with HMS Eclipse and HMS Fur<y in a snow storm in the Barents Sea after trying to find Convoy PQ 13. My father was the only one of 10 F?hnriche zur See to survive.

    4. Gents,

Question about the buttons used by the Handlesmarine. Did they always have the Handelsmarine crest? The boards Webr55 posted has buttons that are definitely not from the DDR or the Bundesmarine. Both these organizations used an anchor with the cross piece at the top in a staright horizontal position. The buttons with the boards webr55 posted have the crosspiece on an angle.

      Regards,

      Gordon

      Hwello,

each shipping company uses their own uniform, cap and also different buttons. There is no conformity in the Handelsmarine, like in the Deutsche Marine.

      regards

      Jurgen

    5. Fregatte;

Poked thru my Ranglisten, which are spotty in the first decade of the 20th Century. I will give you an "as of" date, rank, decorations, and, importantly, the Bezirk to which he reported as a reserve officer. Others who have given help know much better, but I guess that the Bezirk is near to where Karl Meyer was living or working that year. In all of these points in time he was a reserve officer of Garde=Gren.=Regt. Nr. 5.

      6. 5. 06. - Lt. d. R., Bezirk Coeln, no orders.

      6. 5. 10. - Lt. d. R. with the highest seniority, Bezirk Hannover, has the Prussian Royal Crown Order 4th Class.

      1. 5. 11. - Oberleutnant d. R, (low seniority, of course), Bezirk Hannover, same order as above.

      6. 5. 12. - Oblt. d. R., Bezirk Hannover, has the order as above, plus the Landwehr Service Decoration 2nd Class (LD2).

      6. 5. 14. - Oblt. d. R., Bezirk I Cassel, orders as above.

Hope that that is of interest.

      Bob Lembke

thank you very much. You were a great help.

    6. Fregatte;

I do not have the resources of some of the peoiple assisting you, but I have a fair collection of Ranglisten, weaker (sp?) from 1900 to 1910, more complete from 1910 to 1914. Do you want me to poke thru them and see if I can trace his militaty career over this period?

      Bob Lembke

      Hello Bob,

I would be very glad. I have no idea about his career.

      regards

    7. Yeaaahhh... is that an army Black Wound Badge on the end?

Who was a Major aD, or maybe a senior career NCO who came out as a Leutnant aD after 1918, in your families?

Definitely not your grandfather's. The awards don't match, and he died before the Hindenburg Cross was created.

Thank you again for your great help. Yes, we had another relative The brother in law of my Grandfathers wife was Major aD Willy Schneider. The picture is said to have been taken around 1910 in Posen. It could well have been that it were his decorations. way too late to ask anybody of their generation.

      best regards
