The modern version...they obviously awarded a lot...and yes, where have they gone...

The Red Star along with the Order of Lenin was a very prestigious award...then they started to give them for long service and lesser acts, the early ones were definitely hard won.
This is a 15K award...probably for the winter war with Finland.....or for making cups of tea for his boss...

The back...I think this badge also illustrates the silver finish which has been mainly retained and is normally worn off of, many badges...

The front is customized as well with the H and S removed for a silver Lenin head...most strange...I paid no premium for this, bought it for its novelty value for around 20 dollars.

I agree, very nice badges indeed, considering the size of the railways and all its associated troops I think the badge is quite hard to get hold of, the silver ones in particular.
These are two of mine in silver and bronze, the silver are hallmarked and the bronze ones like many badges down graded in materials had a silver finish and like you say, worn off in time.

Your converted piece is known as a dovetail, it was converted at the mint, approx only 4k of these were so converted from the remaining stock of screwbacks when the regulations changed.
See my attachment...it is identical and in the same number range....and you will be please to know I saw one sell recently for 1k US.
