    1. Reinhard,

The Al Bakir University Star was awarded between 1976-2003 to the distinguished students in the Al Bakir University for

Military Higher Studies, All Iraqi Army, Navy and Air Force Officers were allowed to attend this University regardless of their rank.

There are two types of Al Bakir Stars. Both stars are 3 inches in diameter and are identical except for the center disc.

The Italian made (higher quality) was used between 1976-1991. Iraqi made after 1991. The Iraqi's used the Italian- made

star and attached their own disc. The Italian center disc is very well made and the Iraqi center disc is glazed and not as well made.

The items represented in the center disc are a sword (Ground Forces), anchor (Navy) and wing (Air Force). The book represents knowledge, the torch represents the power of knowledge and science, and the quill pen represent science.

Inside the book is a verse from the Holy Qur'an (God give me more knowledge).

Written below the book is Al Bakir University 1976 A.D., 1396 A.H.

There is also a pocket hanger with the central disc which is worn on the military uniform, a central disc with a spring pin

fastener on the reverse which is worn on the civilian clothes, and an cloth patch with the Al Bakir emblem embroidered

      on  the patch.

Below is a picture of the Iraqi made star, hanger , civilian badge and patch.

This information is from my first book on Iraqi Militaria Identification Guide with Translations.

    2. This is an Al Bakir University Star which was awarded between 1976-2003 to the distinguished students in Al Bakir University for Military Higher Studies.

There are two types of Al Bakir Stars.

      1 -  Italian Made higher quality),used between 1976-1991.

      2 - Iraqi Made (used after 1991).

The only difference is the center disc of which the Italian one is better made and higher quality.

This center disc can also be found on a leather pocket hanger which was awarded to officers who graduated from the university. It was

used from 1980-2003 although it has been seen still being worn to date.

This information can be found in the first book I published in February 2011 titled" Iraqi Militaria,Identification Guide with Translations" on page 124-125.

Below is a picture from 2009 showing the leather hanger being worn.

    3. Similar oversized example shown on page 157 of Angolia's 'For Fuehrer and Fatherland' Vol. 2 (1978). Photo came from Mohawk Arms.

So .................. at least we can say that this type existed in 1978.

      Earlier than that ???

      Who knows.

      Certainly well made.

Thanks for the information. After posting this I was told in the book WORLD WAR 2 GERMAN MEDALS BY CHRISTOPHER AILSBY on page 134 there is a discussion

that it possibly was a manufacturer's design test strike. The other theory was that this was the original size made larger to differentiate it from the 4 year (original medal)

in wear but there is nothing to back up the claim.

As you say, it is a well made medal.

      .

    4. Has any one ever heard of a 8 Year SS Service Medal that is 42 mm. in diameter? Around 20 years ago I received one that came out of a opera house that was being torn down. There was a West Wall medal included. No one knows where it came from or how it came to be in a opera house.

      Is this a reproduction?

The diameter is 42 mm and the rim is 2.74 mm. at the top and 2.70 mm. at the bottom.

I wasn't sure if this was the correct topic to post this in.

      Thanks in advance.

      Bob
