    1. The lower Arabic translates as "The Nejdah Police".

      Regards,

      Owain

      Owain,

Thanks for catching the error on the translation. That is what happens when working overtime and then trying to do a quick post and not checking what was posted. Nejdah in Arabic means "rescue" so the translation should be "Rescue Police".

      Regards,

      Bob

    2. Owain - really interesting to see these - thankyou. What period would they be - current , or the old Government. I must say that to see the old historical names of Baghdad and Ninevah - dating back 5000 years was quite exciting. Do you have some more Iraqi Police items you can show ?

Apologies to 'bmsm' who I see actually started the post. First names help prevent these mistakes !!!

I wasn't sure how Iraqi Police Arm patches would be received instead of badges so I didn't post any more.

    3. I'm not sure if this is the correct section to post this topic but while I was at a Military Show in Minneapolis,Mn. on the October 3-4 weekend, Craig Luther told me Marty Vaughan had died August 1 in Florida and was buried in Ohio. Craig had just learned about it just before the Military Show.

Marty was a pioneer in the collecting of Iraqi militaria and published the first book (50 copies) of An Introduction to the Military Badges, Insignia, Patches and Medals of Iraq.

Do you think your friend in Iraq can I.D this badge for me???

      Lorenzo,

I can help you out with most of it.

    6. I, too, Would like to know the color of the Qardoon for the Medical service. Thanks for the great info on the Qardoon!!!

      Doc

      Doc and Paul,

I had my friend do some checking on the qardoons. He asked another dealer about the medical department qardoons and he didn't think the medical department had one. As far as the green qardoon, my friend was told there isn't any specific rank that used the green color but this and other colors were used by detachments in the Military Training Centers to differentiate each detachment from one another. My friend is going to ask another one or two dealers to double check on this information and get back to me. That is all I have for now.

    7. Here is a closeup of the writing on the packet.

      Paul,

Sorry it took so long to get back to you. I got side tracked with posting the different cord colors on a different post.

The Iraqi Eagle-The Iraqi State started to use this eagle as a official emblem since 1963 and this eagles shape was used by the old Islamic leader Salladin from the Ayoobi State around 500A.H.

The large translation below the eagle is " Iraqi Republic".

    8. Here is a medal i just picked up from one of my friends for a good price.

Can some one please help me I.D this Iraqi Piece of history.

I want to put it into the OMSA Medals Data Base:

      Thank you

      Lorenzo

      Lorenzo,

If you wiil look on page # 3 Middle East & Arabian Countries, post # 1 by Sivart ( maybe Fedayeen) the collar disc on the left side has the same emblem as your medal. I had identified it as a collar dics for the Military Academy. I asked my friend in Iraq about your medal and he hadn't seen one like that before but he agreed that the middle of your medal had the same emblem as the Military Academy.

Good luck on your search for more treasures!

      Bob

    9. Thanks!!!

Where are you finding this information?

Also, I am sure that there are other colors as well?

      Now only:

      red and blue,

      yellow,

      black,

Any any others I may be missing!

      Paul R and Lorenzo,

I have been following your posts while waiting for my friend in Iraq to answer me about the different color of ropes.

First of all, habel is not the correct name for the cords. Habel means a rope that you pull or drag things with. The name of the cord which goes around the shoulder is Qardoon.

There are eighteen different shoulder cords that my friend knows of and here is the list. Some are still in use

      1- Infantry-red and green

2- Artillery- red and deep blue

3- Electrical and Mechanical Engineer-red and yellow

4- Military Transportation- red and brown

      5- Tank- red and gray

      6- Republican Guard-red

7- Military Police- white- still used

8- Air Defense- red and light blue

9- Civil Defense- red and white

10- Higher Officers Official Uniform-gilt (or yellow)

      11- 3rd Army (legion)-black and gilt

12- Military College Students-red- still used

13- Air Force College Students-light blue

      14- Police-black and olive

15- Traffic Police- white and deep blue, still used

16- Police MP (Control Units) - black

      17- Police-Nationality Department-black and white

      18-Police College Students-white

I hope this helps you out. I have a question on # 6 and # 12 both being red so will check into it a little farther.

      Bob

    10. Is it made out of actual gold?

I have been following the comments on the Sword of Al Qadissiyah so I would like to post some information that I have on the Decoration.

I took Lorenzo's advice and wrote an article for the JOMSA magazine on the Sword of Al Qadissiyah in November of 2008 so it should be out sometime this year. I have an Decoration like the one posted here at GMIC only mine is on the OMSA website since April 2008. My Decoration was purchased in September 2007 from my friend in Iraq.

The Decoration is a gold plated metal and the stone is an imitation one. It is not known how many were awarded as the information was classified at that time and it wasn't a good idea to be asking too many questions. Many of the official buildings were looted after the fall of Saddam so who knows what happened to the records.

      Bob

    11. Here is a piece that i am looking to buy, but I need the information on this Iraqi Cap before I add it to my collection.

    14. Some more branch insignia.

      Greg,

A few more identifications on your rank badges in post #3 .

Upper left-Military pharmacy rank used in both Kingdom and Republican period. Also used for military vetinarian medicine in Kingdom period.Infantry rank and communication rank.

Lower left- Lower quality beret badge used after 2000.

Lower right-Officers of H.Q. Army inside Ministry of Defense site in Baghdad rank.

      Bob

    15. Next up is some branch insignia. Again unless otherwise stated these all came directly from former Iraqi military. I had a chance to meet a number of former military as they were employed by KBR and helped organize a lot of KBR security.

      Greg,

The insignia that you have are called rank in Iraq. It is similiar to our "collar brass" and can be worn on the collar and beret (or hat).

Upper left -Iraqi Air Force Wing rank and Armor rank

Lower left-Artillery rank, demining rank (removes mines, etc.),and electrical mechanical engineer rank.

I hope this helps in your identification.
