Sorry, I've been away for a few days.
I'm with Mametz here, a sympathisers pin. Hard to say whether it's from the period or not as they are so easy to manufacture.....
Cheers
Don
Detail looks pretty rough, dont know about that one

Hello,
Just want to say...very impressive looking item, even if it didn't have the historical significance attached to it. Very nice find!

Would these not be considered by HM Gov't in precisely the same criminal league as counterfeit coins? Phony Sir Wuzzits strolling around ought to alarm somebody In Authority-- not least, the Royal Mint itself.
well said rick

"Out of Nowhere: a History of The Military Sniper" by Martin Pegler, published by Osprey.
P139 - 140 mention the South African Sharpshooters with a group photo, I would think you already know of this book.

Just to let you all know, there is a fake type 3 (small neck badge) Knights Bachelor around. What makes it dangerous is it comes in a fake red Royal Mint box, the box on close examination is slightly substandard I.E. the central gold bolder is slightly off-centre. The inside of the case has a very plausible royal mint stamp the only give away is that it is slightly fainter as to the badge it actually lacks the depth of the original but the two real give aways are firstly the loop is made of thick wire and lastly and most importantly the reverse is not hallmarked (which they all should be). The style of the box looks 1990's Royal Mint at their worst but with less care. It is believed that these pieces come out of the Netherlands. The piece which I encountered certainly did.
Caveat Emptor as a few may turn up on E-Bay

yet another piece of junk on the market :violent:

I know these stripes were used in WWII, having encountered the issue mainly through the protracted policy debate over how they should be worn in the Indian Army (above the right pocket, so no one ever wore them).
A medal should be made up for veterans!

As I understand it the soldier or Next of Kin (if deceased) had to apply for the "Mons clasp" and many didn't bother or maybe weren't aware. Also I have come across many applications which were marked on MIC "ineligble" as the soldier had to have been under fire.
Mike
Thanks to all for the great info

NO - the actual medal rolls are in the ADM 171 series at the National Archives - unfortunately not on line.
The service record, however, can give a good indication as it lists the ships etc he served on during the war and from this a deduction of entitlement can be made.
Ralph
Thanks again Ralph

Well it is a shame that he has been forced to sell them, but he may as well benefit from them now rather than when he is dead. He has no family to leave them to, so lets hope they have enough health between them to enjoy their last years together in comfort.
very sad

There was also a D/812 Fred Ball 3rd Dragoon Guards who was awarded the BWM & VM so I wonder if he was really FW Ball or WF Ball?
Tony
That does seem logical

Hello gang ,
I have a ww1 mons star medal and i just down loaded a medal card for a W. Ball 3rd Dragoon Guards. The only thing on the card is the 1914 star with a cc/3 beside that. My question is shouldn't this chap have been awarded other medals like thw ww1 victoy and such?

The following sites are I believe US based but their prices leave my eyes watering but some quality items for all that
1. ebay stores-R&M International
2.emedals
Mike
Hi 4782mje,
I agree with you on the prices being way to high at R&M. I ordered a WW1 1914 Mons Star with the bar, was told the bar was genuine, but when i recieved it turned out to be a copy and not a good one at that. Live and learn :banger:
