    1. Thanks,

I should have mentioned that I have already searched the London Gazettes, which however has very difficult to use since they changed the search-string from being a default phrase to using a default Boolean AND. It is okay to make a search for Norman Robertson Campbell as the probability of them all being on the same pages is limited. However searching for him by using his initials N.R. Campbell is completely impossible giving 2026 hits in the WW2 records alone and sadly most entries for the military personnel in Gazettes is using initials only.

    2. I have for some time been puzzled by this notice in the London Gazette 23rd February 1940:

Leon Williamson Amps (118065) to be Lt. (without pay and allces.), and is granted unpaid actg. rank of Maj.-Gen. 5th Dec. 1939

Seems as bit unreasonable to be commissioned as a Lieutenant and then promoted the acting rank of Major-General in one sentence.

Another notice in LG on the 5th of March 1940 elaborates on it:

      Lt. (actg. Maj.-Gen.) L.W. Amps, C.B.E., to be a Dir. 5th Dec. 1939

There is a further notice on 8th of March correcting the C.B.E. to an O.B.E.

I recently found out that Leon Williamson Amps was a civilian Engineer, who was made Director of Labour at the War Office. However further information about him has so far eluded me. He is not listed in the Who's Who 1897-1996, nor have I been able to find anything additionally on him in The Times Archive 1785-1985.

So I was wondering whether some of you might have anything on him?

    3. Hi,

Since he was awarded the ww2 commemorate medal, we must assume that he was alive during ww2. I have got a copy of the Belgian Army list 1939/40 active and retired senior officers (majors and above). Now each officer is mentioned with a list of his awards and decorations in abbreviations. Admittedly I know absolute nothing about how Belgian awards and decorations is abbreviated, but if someone careers to list the abbreviations of the awards of the general in question, then I will see whether I can identify him.

    4. Though I think that Theodor already got this information I am nevertheless going to post it anyway.

Sava Kolev Vuichev, born 22nd July 1872

      2nd August 1893 2nd Lieutenant

      1st January 1897 1st Lieutenant

      1st January 1903 Captain

      15th October 1908 Major

      15th Oct. 1912 Lieutenant-Colonel

      14th August 1916 Colonel

      14th July 1919 Major-General

During his career he served with the Lifeguard Squadron, as an Attach? to Belgrade, with the 6th Infantry Division, as commander of 1st Cavalry Brigade, chief of staff (or just chief - nachalnik) 2nd Cavalry Division. He retired in 1919.

    5. While I can't claim that my database is complete (far from it) I think it comes close when talking about British and Commonwealth generals if you disregard brigadiers and a few local major-generals, and I have no one by that name or anything that comes close. So I suspect that Rich is correct that there is an error in the name or rank.

The one that I have that come the closest is US Brigadier General Raymond Eugene McQuillin, who was in North Africa at the time with Old Ironsides, but wrong army and unit.

Btw. could it be a "translation" of a British/Commonwealth air force rank?

    6. I agree with Peter. Most likely the spelling is somehow wrong. There is no one by the name of Lefebure on my 1941 IA list nor on my 1946 British Army List. A search in the London Gazette only turns up 6 hits on Lefebure with only 3 military related to a John Victor Lefebure in the RAF. It would seem unlikely to have a colonel who wasn't mentioned in the London Gazette during a period of 6 years.

    7. Christian,

The entry of Skuba on my site is most likely a mistake as I have been unable to verify that he became a general during the war (I will remove him). However I am able to offer some small pieces of information:

In 1941 he commanded the 125th Tank Regiment of the 112th Tank Division. He commanded the 6th Guards Tank Brigade 16th April 1942 to 22nd February 1943, and was promoted Colonel 4th July 1942. He then commanded 23rd Guards Tank Brigade 22nd February 1943 to 15th March 1943.

    8. I don't know whether you have noticed that the London Gazette is now available online back to 1752 at http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/archiveSearch.asp Impressive!! Though it appears that they have a bit technical problems at the moment which should be solved next week.

The only the thing that I could wish for is that they made true Boolean searches possible rather than just phrase searches.

    9. I was wondering whether any of you could provide me with any information on this officer. He was apparently the highst ranking Slovak officer in the AH army during WWI. He was a graduate of Budapest Kadetky. He served as a captain on the Italian Front and after the creation of Czechoslovakia became commander of 9th Artillery Regiment in 1923. In 1939 after the formation of Slovakia he became commander of the 2nd Division in September. See: http://www.cess.org/publications/harmoniep...niepaper-11.pdf

I am looking for any information but in particular his date of birth.

    11. Hi,

Here is what I got Colonel Bruce Turnbull, C.B.E. Born 4th November 1880. Date of 1st Commission 28th July 1900. Date of Rank (Colonel) 3rd June 1923. Date of Retirement 20th June 1926. Source: Non-Effective List 1941: in War Services of British and Indian Officers of the Indian Army (Savannah, 2003). A reprint of the 1941 Indian Army List.

From what I have been able to dig out of the London Gazette online archive he served with the 23rd Sikh Pioneers, I.A. and became a Brigade Major on 8th September 1915 (Gazetted 17th September 1915), relinquished on 11th February 1916 (Gazetted 1st March 1916). Brigade Major again 14th August 1916 (Gazetted 9th September 1916). Mentioned as a recipient of the Order of the White Eagle, 5th Class (With Swords) (Gazetted 15th February 1917). To be Lieutenant-Colonel while commanding a battalion from 12th July 1917 (Gazetted 1st January 1918), seems to be 2/34th Pioneers, I.A. as he is made a brevet Lieutenant-Colonel while in command of this 12th September 1919 (Gazetted 9th September 1919). It seems that following his retirement from I.A. in 1926 he was transferred to the Territorial Army, as this entry in the Gazette of 9th November 1937 suggest:

Col. B. Turnbull, C.B.E. (Col. Ret. Ind. Army), having attained the age of limit retires and retains his rank, whit permission to wear the prescribed uniform. 4th Nov. 1937

Then he was granted an emergency rank of 2nd Lieutenant on 3rd September 1939 (Gazetted 5th September 1939). He seized to belong to the reserve of the Indian Army on 4th November 1940 having reached the age limit (Gazetted 20th December 1940). Mentioned as a recipient of the Efficiency Medal (Gazetted 1st July 1947).

From the Army List 1914 I see that he was made a Captain on 28th July 1909. However I can't find him on the 1930 Army List.

Before I did this I had tried my old Who Was Who 1896-1995 CD-Rom, which only runs on Win98 or earlier versions, but I simply couldn't get my old laptop started. But I thought I better try it again before posting and somehow I got it started, so here is his entry:

      name Turnbull, Col Bruce

Awards CBE 1937; TD 1950; DL Edinburgh.

      Positions IA (retd); psc.

Education Merchiston Castle School; Royal Military College, Sandhurst.

    12. This particular example is presumed to be Taisho as I can't find the general's name on the WW2 lists, but I assure you that this exact uniform was worn by general officers throuout the war until 1945, so YES this post would be representative of an AXIS period uniform............but thanks for asking.

      Hi,

Does this mean that you have acess to complete lists of WW2 Japanese generals? If so could you give me the bibliographical info on these publications. I would love to have acess to such lists.

      Thanks in advace.
