Hi, Personally I doubt that the shoulder boards belonged to Franz Joseph. As I said he is not listed in any of the "Список генералитету по старшинству" / "список генералам по старшинству"(List of generals by seniority) 1852, 1855, 1856, 1857, 1859, 1861, 1862, 1863, 1864, 1865, 1866, 1867, 1868, 1869, 1871, 1873, 1874, 1875, 1876, 1877, 1880, 1881, 1882, 1883, 1884, 1885, 1886, 1887, 1888, 1889, 1890, 1891, 1892, 1893, 1894, 1896, 1897, 1898, 1899, 1900, 1901, 1902, 1903, 1904, 1905, 1907, 1908, 1909,1910, 1911, 1912, 1913, 1914 While i.e. Arch-Duke Albert is listed as a Field Marshal.

Actually I am a bit puzzle by this. Does anyone have a date for him becomming a Field Marshal in the Russian Army. I have been going through almost all the issues of the "список генералам по старшинству" (List of generals seniority) between 1848 and 1914. He is not listed in any of them, while a large number of Royalties and other dignitaries from other nations is - including others from AH holding honorary ranks.

Though I can't say for sure but after a bit of searching in the London Gazette I have come with this, which I think, is the officer in question. Having been a War Substantive Lieutenant-Colonel it is likely that he was a Temporary Colonel and perhaps an Acting Brigadier. SUPPLEMENTARY RESERVE OF OFFICERS. ROYAL ENGINEERS. Although not the same date of death as given by Andy the colonel in question must be Julius Gregorovius, brother of the more famous historian Ferdinand Gregorovius. Julius was born 19th Aug. 1819 at Tapiau and died 18th Jul. 1891 in Planegg at Munich. David, A name or two would be helpful

Hi Chris, I have asked a friend of mine to check the 1914 Russian seniority list and asked him a posible POW by that name. By 1914 there were there generals by the name of Sokolov: Major-General Vladimir Ivanovich Sokolov, b. 1862 Major-General Klavdii Petrovich Sokolov, b. 1852 Major-General Sergei Petrovich Sokolov, b. 1858 However none of them appears to have become POWs. V.I. Sokolov became a Lieutenant-General in 1917, later he joined the RKKA but was executed in 1919. K.P. Sokolov was still in service in 1916, but he never saw front service S.P. Sokolov could be a candidate as he commanded 2nd Brigade of 30th Infantry Division in 1914. It fought in East Prussia in 1914 near Gumbinnen. The 30th Infantry saw heavy losses. My friend has no information on his later career, but he does not appear on the 1916 seniority list. However apparently he emigrated after the Revolution and died in 1934. Do you have any additional information what so ever?

Hi Roeland, A search on him in Google Books get an result on him in "Listes g?n?rales d?anciennet? des officiers de l?arm?e active des armes et services, 1936" which has him attached to the 507 RCC. Hi, I think that the answer is founded in the fact that he was Flag Lieutenant (later Flag Commander) to the Board of the Admiralty, and thereby severing the First Lord of the Admiralty. V.V. Semashko is a bit interesting since he actually wasn't demoted as such. One could said that he is downfall started already in 1940, because when the rank of general was reintroduced in June 1940 he was only certified as a Major-General (4th June 1940) and not as a Lieutenant-General as one might have expected when holding the rank Komkor. I have been unable to make out why! But least now I got his position and rank just prior to June 1940. Thanks! Semashko was arrested on the 10th April 1942 and released (conditionally) 21st December 1945. Apparently crimes his crimes were to have expressed reservations about the collective farm system, final Soviet victory and having blamed the 'leadership' (no names) for the early defeats and having favourably compared German weapons to those of the Red Army. Rick ? are you able to read the name of the political officer? I will have to put him up as well.

Okay - got his full name William Leslie Dibben. Still interested in his court-martial.

Could anybody provide me with the full name of British Brigadier W.L. Dibben, M.C. commander of 144th Infantry Brigade October 1941 ? April 1944. He had previously commanded 2nd Battalion The Royal Warwickshire Regiment. Apparently he was dismissed from the Service following a court-martial in June 1944, and if anybody got information on that story I would also be interested.

It appears that this is one of Kempton's errors. After a suggestion from a member from AHF I took a closer look at Brigadier Eric Henry Blaker who I had as commander for the period, and a search in Google books I found reference to him as commander of 47th Indian Infantry Brigade. So the mystery is solved. So I am sorry to have made you search in vain.

Chris Kempton in his: 'Loyalty & Honour : The Indian Army September 1939 ? August 1947' list a Brigadier E.H. Blacker, MC as Commander of 47th Indian Infantry Brigade between 1st November 1942 and March 1943. However I have been unable to identify this officer! I have tried the following sources with no luck.
