    1. Hey, at these prices, I could acquire quite the (non-rare) extensive collection! Are there any books or guides to DDR militaria in English that you know of?

"Militaria" or medals? If "medals", I don't know of anything in English, but with very basic (or no) German you can use:

Frank Bartel, DDR-Spezialkatalog, vol. 1, Staatliche Auszeichenungen der Deutschen Demokratischen Republik 1949-1990, 3rd ed. ([berlin: Internationale Sammlerb?rse Berlin, 2003]; ISBN 3-937637-11-1)

Ingo G. Haarke and Andr? H?sken, Deutschland-Katalog: Orden, Ehrenzeichen and Auszeichnungen der Deutsche Demokratischen Republik, 1st ed. ([Hamburg: Ingo G. Haarke and Andr? H?sken], 1991/92; no ISBN)

      See: http://www.omsa.org/forums/showthread.php?t=626

    2. Pictures would be great. All I could contribute would be to scan the pictures from Battushig's book and his later article on Tsedenbal's star. And I don't like recycling images from the work of others

So far as I know, both stars are today in the Central Bank, though Choibalsan's may have surfaced from the national museum.

    3. All Labor Heroes in Mongolia are awarded by Sukhebaatar Order (authomatically). Correct name is Banzragch Es, but it did not say something to me... Maybe Labour Hero came from Western provinces (unusual name - Es)... AND Hero is not SHE, Es is mostly male name... So question is still open - WHO IS HE.

Thanks, "ub". Yes, the secomd Sukhbaatar was the one that accompanied the hero. Many questions need research.

    4. Much to figure out, Johnsy.

I'm guessing "PMO" is "Punjab Medical Office" (or some such), but this can be checked.

Rarely was "Mr." used for any Indians, as it was deemed a too respectful title. Likely pretty long service (well, 1895 to 1926 at least) and guessing a pretty high salary (likely well over the Rs. 500 p.m. minimum, below which they'd give him a BEM) , susprised they didn't put him up for a direct Rai Bahadur (but maybe they did?). Only the recommendation -- the next time I'm in Delhi -- will reveal this.

      Suspect medals missing.

      I love puzzles.

    5. My ONLY core interest acquisition from the 2007 OMSA.

A pair that wants MUCH research:

1- George V, 1st variety, Title Badge, Rai Sahib -- "Mr. Dan Singh Rai, 3rd July 1926" -- Not. No. 333-H of 3 July 1926, "Mr. Dan Singh Rai, Superintendent, Medical Branch, Lahore District Headquarters" -- the use of "Mr." is unusual, and the title is most likely a retirement gift (but those recommendations can be especially rich)

2- Victoria, IGS 1895, "TIRAH 1897-98", "PUNJAB FROINTIER / 1897-98", and "RELIEF OF CHITRAL / 1895" -- "Clerk Dan Singh Rai office of P.M.O." (???)

      ????

    6. The only other possibility is the Imperial Soldier Support League cert since sometimes they will mention the former unit of the recipient.

I was afraid of this, Paul. It is the largest item in the set of documents. :)

      As translated:

"This certifies that in the 1904-05 War you were decorated for fighting with great bravery and being wounded, and according to the rules of this society you are give the loyal and brave cherry blossom flower medal [what is THAT??]as a token of our appreciation.

      "17th September Meiji 40

"Head of Imperial Soldier's Suppoort League

"2nd rank and holder of the 1st order oif merit Viscount Enomoto Buyo

"Former Army Infantry Sergeant Miyamoto Uraji"

Hard to scan and paste up, as 'tis SOOO large. Hope this works. One can hope!

<100% perfect paste-up, but I hope it will do. Cannot find the issuing body in my SOURCE, by folks named Murphy and Ackley (who's them?!).

    7. Hi Ed,

Geez... okay, now I have to find documented awards because I LOVE those docs!!!!:love::jumping:

Yet more things to add to the list.

Thanks for sharing... they are beautiful!

      Dan

      But, at a tightly rolled 49 cm x 34.5 cm (19-1/4" x 13-3/16") they are a "beee-atch" to scan"

      Lovely things, though! :jumping:

    8. And

14 December Meiji 41 - award of 30 yen 10 sen for merit, Army Toyama School

Translated (through Steve -- and I finally got your wondrous book!) as:

      "Army Infantry Sergeant Miyamoto Uraji

"You are awarded 30 yen 10 sen as an award for merit.

      "14th December Meiji 41.

      "Army Toyama School"

Not much joy, I fear? Maybe all the documents are just too late to fiull in the blanks?

    9. Thanks, Paul (and all).

If (IF) I can scan and paste them together, here are:

1 December Meiji 39 - appointed senior sergeant (Army Toyama School)

      Translated as:

"Army Infantry Sergeant 7th order of merit and 6th class of bravery Miyamoto Uraji.

"You are appointed as Senior Sergeant.

      "1 December Meiji 39.

      "[seal of Army Toyama School]"

Focusing in on the "sexy stuff" (I hope). Nice calligraphy ;) but beyond that I am ignorant :(:banger: .
