Hi,
do you mean pre 1914 or pre 1918 ?
Pre-1914.

This is hard, and our aesthetics don't matter. Both options represent the usually hidden history of the person and both reflect his time and how he saw and displayed his own service. Given the option, of course, I'd go pre-WWI entirely, though research chances are slimmer.

I don't quite like the patina. I say it's a fake.
Moreover, it isn't like the one I have in my collection, so it must be FAKE.
Oh, yes, right, Bob . . . .
Isn't this a nice place!

In my main field (British etc. medals), there has been great success in using the OMRS and OMSA to publicise lists of stolen medals (as all are named) and there has been a good success rate in recovering stolen medals. This has gained some respectability for our "hobby" in the UK at least.
I cannot but imagine that an effort to list, identify, and return legitimately stolen (is that an oxymoron?) medals would be a good thing, but some -- some of us and some in Russia -- might not like the outcome.
Isn't anything high and undocumented at least suspect? The sort of "leakage" that was obvious when I visited the Central Museum of the Great Patriotic War and, to a lesser extent, the Central Museum of the Armed Forces made this abundantly clear. What is the state of provincial military museum? Empty, I expect, all sold off, and far far away. When the entire contents of the Musuem of Cosmonautics can be sold (both domestically and internationally), why should these small baubles be any exception.
While I wish the Russians luck in recovering stolen heritage, I look at the example of the Greeks and the Elgin Marbles and the Indians and the Koh-i-Noor and doubt I'll hold my breath for them to succeed.
And I am not sure that ODM are the place to start. In any case, Tsar Putin and his minions will have more pressing matters to worry about, I suspect.

There was a software glitch this morning in the other forum. Even as a moderator on that other forum, I couldn't log on! It has been resolved though as had was noted earlier in the thread. It's amazing how a keystroke or two can take down a server... which can then take down tons of websites and the like! I remember when my provider upgraded servers about three years ago and "lost" the 450MB worth of files that made up my website... not a fun experience!
Dave
Thanks, Dave. It does remind us all of the fragile transience of internet sources and, correspondingly, of the permanence of the printed media.
Write those books and articles!

Ahhhh . . . we now have another candidate: The Dresden-based composer ("Dresden Sketches") and musician Heinz Kunert. Seems more likely than "the other Heinz"? Or is he too young? Still active in 2006.

No, Jon. Talking about discussion fora on Soviet awards.

Let us, please, not get into forum wars here.
Some of us have opinions --
-- but'd we'd rather keep them quiet.

So many bars, so many years....
I feel the same way, Rick. Oh . . . you were talking about MEDALS??

I would agree with Ed, the lower the numbers, the better bet for real research. It will be exciting, but then where do we get the records translated!!!?????
Most likely from the researcher who may also be gearing up to offer Paul-style authentification certificates.

True, Doc, it is so easy to break rules there. One reason I don't visit or post much. I did so at the specific request of a mutual friend and came to regret it.
Still, would hate to see any sibling forums unwell, even the WAF . . . well, . . . .

To he honest, I don't visit there much, but occasionally pop over. When I went over there this mormning, I was greeted by a "THIS ACCOUNT HAS BEEN SUSPENDED" (apparently for non-payment) banner. Did something happen??

No, Darrel, he?s not mad, he is eccentric
God thanks i am one of the collectors, who still has his mind together.
Got to go now, my Red Banners talked to me and told me to kill the fascist neighbor next door
PS: AWESOME smiley
"Eccentric"?! In this crowd, how could you tell?!?

Which groups didn't you get, when you could have, which you'll regret until you die?
Mine? Havildar Musharaf Khan:

But, go to any DNW auction, and you can "feel-up" the goodies before the sale commences. I have had the chance to fondle both Probyn's and Gough's VC groups. They both now live, I am told, with Lord Ashcan.

Closeup on IT.
Sorry, won't show the reverse.

I WONDER what a piece of original VC ribbon goes for???
I'd be interested to know too. Have 4-5 meters. (From an old-time military tailor in New Delhi.)

Nope, no armed guards. Just a medal dealer I have dealt with for over thirty years. Have better photos, but here's a group shot of the "first part" of the group to come in (the others followed the next day). All direct from the family. Unfortunately, he had dipped all his copper-nickle medals and made them ugly, but he did it. The (idiot) family de-mounted them all to marlket them.
Restricted on the details I can discuss. Sorry.
Was sorely tempted, I can say that!

Had the chance to hold one (and the accompanying group) recently. Ooooohhhh!!
