Good news!

Please elaborate - just got this one from the January Markov auction
Shall do so, but my specimens are currently half a world away and unavailable for comparison. As soon as possible. How is the "feel" of the medal. Sometimes hard to tell from scans.

Ohhhhhhhhhhh.
I don't much like the looks of that one. I know some fakes exist. Have we just seen one?

The DSC is higher than the DSM.
Now, yes, But things change over time (it is called 'history'). Away from references, I am reluctant to say more.

OK, here is where things stand:
-- Two nagging questions are now resolved. Final printing and binding are underway even as I type.
-- The decision on cover design has been made (after much to-and-fro).
-- The book -- Edward S. Haynes and Rana T. S. Chhina, Medals and Decorations of Independent India ([New Delhi]; Manohar, 2008; ISBN 978-81-7304-719-0; 272 pp.) -- will be out, I/we/they think/expect/hope, by about this Friday, 27 June. It will be hardbound, full-color (and full-colour too), on coated paper.
-- It will be listed for purchase (ASAP) on the publisher's website -- www.manoharbooks.com --with an anticipated price of Rs. 2750.
-- Like any other book that is not 'sacred text', it isn't prefect, but will, we hope, be of use.
-- Once it is out, anyone who can get Rana and me together in the same place (pre-paid airline tickets?) is welcome to autographed copies.
-- I am looking for someone to have at least a 'FOR DISPLAY ONLY' copy in the bourse at the OMSA, thought I may not be there myself.
I hope it was worth the long gestation.
While both Rana and I have other, separate, projects on the table just now, a South Asian Battles and Medals is being discussed.

I think that it is comical!! The Victory Cross!! hahahaha! I cannot believe that he would award himself a medal with his own portrait on it! I dont think that anyone could get more vain than that!
But don't most 'royals' do exactly that?

Not a very good picture of a cavalry major's tunic. From the Dornogobi Aimag museum.

Back on track, a well-decorated Upambayaryn Gombojav.

Another of that generation, Damdinbazar, also honored by the Manchus.

Not exactly one of "our sort", but here is Navaannzrg, one of the Mongolian emissaries to St. Petersburg before the revolution. While many of those on this delegation got Tasarist awards (giving them the idea for the Order of the Vajra), he is wearing a Chinese Imperial award here.

This list may be getting more important. I just say a mountain of Special Service Medals (both clasps) and none with regiments. Grrrr.

Yes, they were awarded by rank. The US only allowed acceptance of the lowest class (except for Schwarzkopf). While other non-Arab "allies" in Gulf War II allowed acceptance of the full range of classes, few have allowed the wearing of the medal.

Based on http://sagongs.ipbhost.com/index.php?showt...0&#entry218 he was signal corps.

Good for Chuck, and really good for you, Mike. We look forward to seeing you back in the game. Amazing how new toys can make you feel better? You've been missed, mate!

The only bilingual clasp to the Samanya Seva Medal.
Due to flagrant theft, it was never added to the website. It will, of course, be in the book. (Now in print/bind - in the interime, see http://sagongs.ipbhost.com/index.php?showtopic=107 for those who are signed up over there or http://gmic.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=14647 here).
No unit listed? Let me check the service number ranges.
