ok, i'll bite. what do the runes symbolize? i don't think i've encountered this cross before. do period fotos exist that show it being worn by freikorps members/veterans?

NO! not everything has been identified!!!! Also no one seems to be able to Identify his mysterious Breast Badge. I guess if it is not German, no one cares. George in Eureka.
looks like an austro-hungarian combat leadership badge

Here's another one, also described as being WWI, with a citation cross on the ribbon. Note the design is similar utilizing the countrie's coat of arms but, the other side is different and there is no date on this one. Also, note the difference in suspension.
Post WWI?
Tim
examples with the 1917 date and this type of wire suspension also exist...

i've noted that niemann has sold this type in the past, and carsten zeige's most recent auction also had one of these up for sale (unsold). both vendors state that this type is of later manufacture. can anyone place it into a definitive time frame/maker? rothe, perhaps?
it's silver gilt and unmarked

i certainly don't have a problem with this cross. the flaking of the paint is relatively common with these examples. also, the beveled tips of the cross are a nice feature.

wasn't there a militaria dealer in england that was selling these contemporary cases (or something very similar) for a variety of awards? if i recall correctly, many of them were configured as deluxe iron cross/ knight cross cased sets. please correct me if i am in error!
