it's a heavy 64mm bronze disc with a leather knot in center. looks nautical-is it a weight to hold down charts? what does it say, and how old is it? any info greatly appreciated.

hello, enzo
thank you very much for the info!
it was explained to me by the previous owner that this example was not an official piece and was thus priced very reasonably. he was of the opinion that it dates from the 20s or 30s.

That's an interesting piece. I think it was popular for women to convert their husband's decorations after the war like this. I have an Iron Halfmoon which is similar.
hiya VtV,
any chance of an image of your TWM?

yet here is an image from my waldorf-astoria 'orden' cigarette card album. perhaps the earlier (1900+) version without swords had only two rings? or the third ring could quite possibly be due to a jeweler's whim. p.s. or for use on a medal bar?

here is an image (courtesy of diggerhistory) that explains my ring reasoning

i believe there should be a third (larger) ring above the oval. it hangs paralell to the ring which is affixed to the cross.

Eric, that is actually an "I", not an "F".
thank you, i realized my error shortly after posting but decided not to edit out my ignorance.
gives more room for discussion!
so, given the absence of this name either on the rangliste or on the casualty list, the legitimacy of this cross may be fairly grim, right?

i agree Hardy and it's a poignant reminder of what this award ultimately signifies. it's just hard for me to think about it sometimes when i look at my collection. rather morbid, but part of the entire picture
