there are actually 4 classes: a pinback star, a neck cross, a pinback cross, and a ribboned cross.
clarification:
verbands-ehrenzeichen sonderstufe (steckstern)
ehrenkreuz 1. klasse (halskreuz)
ehrenkreuz 2. klasse (steckkreuz)
ehrenkreuz 3. klasse (am band)

the 'dimple' is very similar to the one on this (uncleaned) heavily vaulted example that also has hinge and catch plates.

an interesting feature about the vault: while it is perfectly uniform and deep, there is a circular 'dimple' in the center of the arms on the reverse.

hello steve
as your example appears to be vaulted, i figured i'd add a flat example. this one has has been weathered

very nice!
one encounters this particular type of pin/hinge system on a wide array of 20/30s veteran's organization awards

hello richard,
to me, the core seems quite generic for these later crosses. it's this specific pin assembly that i haven't come across before.

i'm not sure if i'm supposed to revive old topics.
it's perfectly fine to revive old topics--that's why we keep them around!
this inscription was a common contemporary catchphrase at the time. it can be found on a wide variety of artifacts ranging from photo albums, drinking vessels, and a wide variety of iron cross-related items.

hi christophe,
i think i figured it out while going through my collection. the lippe cross with the inscription 'for heldenmutige tat' is indeed larger than an ek1--- and the lippe cross WITHOUT this inscription is smaller and roughly the same size as an ek1. perhaps we are looking at the 'regular' version?
just a thought.
best,
