Hi Megan
Thank you for sharing.
Interesting that they call a campaign medal the "valour" medal. The word valour certainly gives the perception of high distinction. Must have been a great morale booster for the men who served in the Congo in those days.

Thank you for sharing your images about Burkino Faso. Facinating to say the least.

....... Is there a chance that you could post an image of the ribbon poster.
Jean-Paul
Hi Jean-Paul
Unfortunitely the poster is a massive thing. It shows all the medals, not just the ribbons. I will look around to see if I can get something smaller to post, specifically focussing on the ribbons.
We'll keep in touch in this regard.

........... One of my main area of collecting is ribbons. I've now seen 3 different pictures of this medal and each one has a different ribbon. Do you know which ribbon is the correct one?.........
Hi Jean-Paul
According to my records the correct ribbon is the one as shown in the image I posted. I have a medal poster issued by the SA Defence Force showing that ribbon.

Hi Norman. I must congratulate you on putting together such a fine collection of the old Homeland medals. I used to see a lot of them - however, they seem to have disappeared. Perhaps being collected overseas ? One day - like the old enamel shoulder titles - they will become much higher priced.
Thank you Mervyn
Trying to do my bit. Sadly (for history's sake) it is a part of SA history that is fast being forgotten. Very interesting collection matter though.

Evening Gents
Just added this piece to my collection. It is the Ciskei Commander of the Defence Force Commendation. The medal is real hard to come by these days. So when I saw one up for grabs I had to take it, immediately.
Collection growth for 2011 has started.

........ One point of interest to collectors' - the number on the reverse is not the recipient's - as perhaps in the UK. Rather each medal issue has it's own numbering - which can make research quite difficult.
Have to agree with you on that one Mervyn. Pairing a medal with the recipient is very often a nightmare of the worst kind , especially where the two have been seperated for some time. I frequently run into these challeging puzzles.

Morning All
While bargain hunting on the net I stumbled onto these medals from Lesotho. The reason for posting is that there are a few subtle differences from the images Megan has posted previously on this subject.
The first difference I noticed is a change on the designs of I think the obverse sides of the Lesotho medals. I unfortunetily have no idea if the changes are new ones or changes that occured in the past. I found this design for the Gallantry Medal and the Meritorious Service Medal. The Police medals still have the designs as posted by Megan.
Judge for yourselves and enlighten me with answers if possible.

Norman - under British Navy (next one down) half way down page 2 - under - British Navy First Three Months of Boer War - the first picture shows HMS Doris. A very strange name for a British warship. The crew must have spent their time fighting the crews of other ships ?
Thank you Mervyn. I will have a look.

Hi Mike
A super collection of books you have there. One I don't see in your collection is the series writen by J.H. Breytenbach "Geskiedenis van die Tweede Vryheidsoorlog" or History of the Second Boer War (loosely translated). You probably don't have it because it was published in Afrikaans. It is a very handy series for reference.
One favour Mike
Can you please check if my great grandfarther, one Henry William Gilbert's QSA is mentioned in your book the Medal Roll of the QSA to the Brithish Navy and Marines by Spink.
He served on HMS Doris and his enlistment number was 190549. Will appreciate it.

Hi Mike
Thank you for sharing. This part of the history of the Anglo-Boer War is sadly fading from memory. Do you perhaps have the names of the Scandinavian members who received the Dekoratie vir Trouwe Diens (DTD)? If yes, please post.

Norman

Hi Chris
Thanks for these research inputs. Valuable stuff indeed.
If you come across South African recipients of the 1914 Star during your research please forward their names to me. According to what I could dig up so far only seven South Africans received this medal. I have traced five of the seven, with a six name yet to be confirmed. I posted it as a topic bout two years ago on this forum.

Any more informaton on Henry William Gilbert? Names of parents, siblings, that sort of thing?
Afternoon Everybody
An update on what I could find
Henry William Gilbert was born 5 Dec 1880 in Debtford, London?(to be confrmed) and served on HMS Doris during the Anglo-Boer War. He was awarded the QSA with the Cape Colony Clasp and was one of only 20 Royal Navy personnel to be awarded the Kings South Africa Medal for service ashore in the Cape. His service number in the Royal Navy was 190549? (to be confirmed) and he served as a qualified signalman.
I'm struggling to trace his date of birth, parents names etc. This will help me go beyond the 4th generation down in history of my family.
Any help welcome.

Norman
