    1. There have been some questions posed before regarding the prefix on the regimental numbers on South African medals of WWII but I would like to go over this again since we have a good number of members from that country.

In my collection I have the following prefixes which are listed below with what I believe they are indicating. I would appreciate any comments as to whether I am correct or not. I will be posting this area of my collection at a later date.

N = Native. The madal I have is named to a fellow I believe to be a member of the Zulu Nation.

C = Cape Corps. This indicates a person of "mixed" colour or would it perhaps also be to non-blacks such as Indians?

      F = Female.

W = Women's Auxiliary Army Service. The "F" and "W" prefix identifications were provided by the sellers of these medals.

No prefix = Indicates a white person.

      Regards

      Brian

      Hi Brian

You have them quite right except C= Coloured but your explanation is correct.

You also get M= Malay which is closer to the Indians.

    3. Hi all - New Member & herewith a close-up of my Cadet Corps Medal ... # 153 ..........

      Afternoon DuneRider

Hartly welcome to GMIC. Happy to see another SA participant.

Did you buy your medal from Franni recently? Missed out due to penny shortage at the time of the auction.

      Enjoy

      Norman

    4. I know what it is... but maybe for the rest of the world... define NUTRIA?

      Hi all

Nutria was the brown combat uniform worn by SADF soldiers up to about 1996 when it was replaced with camouflage uniform. Hope that explanation helps. I will see if I can find a photo to post

    5. ........... Norman will have to re-write his book now ??

      Morning Mervyn and Neville

Luckily for me, my book deals with a seperate medal. Neville thanks for the follow-up information you provided on the NCC medals.

This is why I enjoy this forum - Always something new to discuss, ponder or learn.

      Regards

      Norman

    6. Hi Norman,

....... While doing your research did you find any information on the Naval Cadet Corps (noe Sea Cadet Corps) long service medal. I served in the Naval Cadets at school and continued as a Adult Instructor (Officer) after my NS. I was awarded the NCC 10 year long service later in the late 90's the medal was changed, but I have been unable to find out how many were presented and if they are reconised SA awards.

      Neville

      Morning Neville

Welcome to the forum. Your medal is something totally new to me. I did not even know of it's existance. According to me the medal was not part of the award range of the SADF and SANDF. The award is an organisational one. Recognition wise, no if you look at the table and order of precedence of South African Awards.

      Still very interesting.

      Regards

      Norman

    7. Hi all

During my December break I was fortunate to meet the son of one of South Africa's WWII heroes. He told me his dad's story and showed me the original citation for the award of the medal to his farther. Also saw the photo of Sgt Ball receiving his George Medal in 1947 from the king.

I don't know how and why the medal was not kept in the family. The son asked me if I can help him trace the medal. He just wants to know the medal's whereabouts to give him some peace of mind.

      Any help will be appreciated.

      Regards

      Norman

    8. Nicolas de Roffignac who published a book on African Orders & Medals in 2000 wrote the ribbon to be red/white and he did research on official text for his book (page 39).It's a more reliable source of information.

      Morning Emmanuel

Are copies of the book still freely available? What is the price? Seems that it can be a must have reference work if one is interested in African orders, decorations and medals.

      Regards

      Norman

    9. I got mine with a white ribbon with red edged stripe.

The blue ribbon with tiny yellow & whithe stripes seems more correct.

      Which auction is it ?

      Is it already sold ?

      Emmanuel

      Afternoon Heusy68

    12. Morning all

For those interested in South African Orders, Decorations and Medals, a new book on this subject was privately published last week. It retails at ZAR 750.00 excluding postage. It seems to be a very comprehensive work.

Interested? Google bidorbuy south africa for details.

      Regards

      Norman
