    1. Hi all

I am currently busy with research into this award of the South African Defence Force (1966 to 1976). I have plenty reading matter but require good quality images of the medal.

Good images of the medal is as scarce as the medal itself.

      Will appreciate all inputs.

      Regards

Elsewhere in this forum an appeal is made for SAAF squadron patches, so I decided to open a new topic dedicated to this subject. My contribution is the patch of 2 Squadron, SAAF, the "Flying Cheetahs", which was adopted during the Korean War. As far as I know, prior to that SAAF squadrons did not have squadron patches. 2 Squadron was part of the US 18th Fighter-Bomber Wing in Korea and they copied the patch idea from their American comrades in this unit. The SAAF patches were made of silk in Korea by Korean ladies (and their sewing machines), who attached themselves to the UN forces to provide such housewifely services.

2 Squadron patches of this vintage are difficult to find.

      Hi Brett,

Stunning patch and difficult to come by - I posted the appeal for SAAF Squadron patches - are you able to source any? Please let me know.

    3. Could'nt remember if it was standard or Guards - standard with a few distinct variations - Coldstream Guards with their own elongated design, I think Border Regiment with a distinctive squared off shape.

Produced in various metal finishes including gilt & anodised, bullion, plastic economy for WWII, & cloth in different colours including those with arm of service backings, different sizes & coloured metals etc depending on the unit concerned.

Are the ones shown in a bronzed finish? The standard Officers Service Dress version.

The 3 devices in the centre are crowns.

Hi, Thanks for all your input - this really sorts things out for me (Where did I get 'parachutes' from??)

      These are in bronze.

    4. Hi all,

Are there any websites where I can buy lengths of ribbon for US medals?

I have a group that I would like to mount for display myself, but I can't seem to find anywhere where I can buy ribbon to do the job.

I've tried several of the big US medal mounting websites and they all say they can't help me.

      Any ideas?

      Thanks,

      Marco

      Hi Marco.

Try Vanguard Industries - http://www.vanguardmil.com/store/index.php?main_page=index click on Medals and Ribbons.

      They managed to help me.

      Regards,

      Gary

Hi again, Thanks for your help here. I have found someone who is willing to help - Vangard Industries, they sell by the yard - I have placed an order with them and am still waiting for delivery. I'll let you know if they come through.

Hi Norman - Not sure if you received my message on the Transkei Flashes topic. Would you be able to find some Pictures of Modern SA Groups for me?

      Regards,

      Gary

    7. Hi again Paul

Here is an image showing how the shoulder flashes are worn. In this case it is the flash of the South African Army. Enjoy.

      Regards

      Norman

Hi Norman - As you are aware already I collect / trade in SA medals. One area I lack in is pictures of modern SANDF groups. Are you able to find any in SA? I moved to London from Cape Town in 2001 and find it difficult to get good pictures of modern SA medals here. - If you do find some you can either post them on this site if you wish or I can PM you my email address.

    8. what medal ribbons do you need?

Hi Ulsterman - Apologies for butting in here, but your response makes me think you could help - I am desperatly looking for some lengths (6-8 inches or more if you can) of mini US medal ribbon. If you can help, here is what I need: Air medal, Dist Flying Cross, Republic of Korea medal, Purple Heart, Air Service USA, Defence Meritorius Service, USAF Cross, Navy&Marine Corps Medal & Selected Marine Corps Service.

I have tried numerous sites with no joy, so you are pretty much my last hope - I have a Paypal account to pay by.

      Kind regards, Gary

    9. Hi Chris,

The first 3 medals on this topic were never issued and are un-named.

As you have no doubt seen the responses above that the Police one is a MSM, as LS&GC medals do exist.

      Thanks for your interest

      Gary
