Some very nice binoculars gentlemen :)

    2. Brett,

Thanks for the shout on the Benutrzer.

There are two gents one UK based, theother USA based who are selling reproduction Benutzers.

Prices ?120 UK and ?157 for USA products.

All in all expensive for a reproduction.

Having said that a period replacement will sting at about ?200 , which is insane but that is what is being asked for them .

      Thanks again Brett.

      JS,

I know your post is about a year old, but if you are still looking for the benutzer for your 8x60, there is a guy on ebay selling some now. Repros and mega expensive but might be worth you having a look.

      Cheers,

      Brett

    3. Mike,

Thank you for the info on the ship.

I had no idea about the colouring to denote a militray ship , none at all.

My father had no connections with Korea so i am inclined to think this must be a WW2 photograph .

Thanks again for you reply, much appreciated.

Could it be one of the US hospital ships from the Korean war? I can't remember their names, unfortunately...

The (green) stripe between the crosses indicates a military hospital ship (as opposed to a civilian hospital ship).

      /Mike

    4. A long shot - would anyone have any id on this hospital ship and the location ?

I found it in an old wallet belonging to my father , no date or note on the reverse.

name of the ship can almost be made out , Manca or manco ??

      I cannot be 100% certain.

Unfortunately I have no background information on the photograph.

If anyone is intersted I can send a higher resolution jpeg to them.

      Mail me to james@cameron8888.fsnet.co.uk.

      Thanks to all in advance.

    5. Tug has a very good point regarding Hood. That was a fair battle which the Royal Navy lost, badly. Prince of Wales was actually firing on Prinz Eugen (the heavy cruiser which escorted Bismarck) for the first five minutes of the battle because her profile was so similar to Bismarck. The Germans were in a better ship and were well trained and disciplined.

Prince of Wales was just seven months old when lost, a complete waste of what actually turned out to be a very well designed ship of King George V class. Repulse was another has-been that shouldn't have been anywhere near that theatre of war. Japanese pilots spoke of men at the anti-aircraft guns still firing as they went under the water. Amazing bravery.

Churchill got the phone call telling him of the sinkings in the middle of the night, and said it was the worst moment of the war for him. They wouldn't even let the papers report it because of the dent it would put in morale. The ships should never have been there, the age of the big-gun Capital ship had already passed and Churchill should have learnt the lessons of Norway and Crete regarding putting ships in areas under enemy air control.

Missed this on an earlier read.

It was Prince of Wales who correctly identified Bis,arck for what she was.

Prinz Eugen was in the lead and Holland in Hood mistakenly took her for Bismarck.

Apparrently there existed a standing order withinth the kreigsmarine which forbade a cruiser entering action against a larger enemy vessel- this quickly went out the window when Hood openned fire.

Churchill said of POW that it was great to have something which could "catch and kill anything" ( Quote may not be exact.

Good book on the subject is "Battleship" by Martin Middlebrook.

    7. Hi James,

Lovely post, and my hat off to you for taking the time and effort to visit his Grave. It's nice to have his memory kept alive.

      Regards,

      John

I have a translated copy of the Dutch Police report which details the discovery of Jimmy's body and the Action report filed by the marine Flak battery which shot them down.

This research was done in the mid 1980's just to know more about what happened to them, "missing" is such a heartless term.

I had hoped that the Air Historical Branch of the MOD might have revised their records to link the loss of HR715 (NP-E) to the claim made by Vlieland West.

This they would not do as two other aircraft were missing , one a Lancaster went down off Den Helder and a 76 Squadron Halifax which failed to return.

Four of the Hailifax crew were washed ashore on Borkum suggesting that they were lost locally to the Island.

Because of these two uncertain losses they won't close the book on E/158 , even though Dutch researchers like myself are sure Vlieland West shot E/158 down.

Will look out the two reports , they make interesting reading.
