Last time I saw this it did come with a mini...

Last, a picture - wish it was of Asche No such luck, but of an Off-Stellv from his regiment in 1915 wearing his own binos.
Anyway, a small inexpensive item, but I really like it. You can't say with certainty but it was likely with him when he died. If it could talk it would surely tell a tale or two...the unit seemed to be fairly heavily committed during the early years of the war.
Thanks for looking....
Best,
Luc

The owner was a Lt. dR Friedrich ASCHE, born Jan 9th, 1885.1914 Rangliste shows Asche as a Lt. dR in IR57. Subsequently transferred to RIR256 where he served in the II Battalion, 6.Komp from Mid July 1915. Killed at Kryscenie near Vilnius on Sept 11th, 1915.
Scans from the Rangliste and the RIR256 history...

Usually I stick to visors...and dabble slightly in ribbon bars and medals. And normally it's cavalry items...but something about this piece I really liked. Besides I had a Reserve Infantry Officer visor that it is now displayed next to, so it's found a good home
This is my first of these (and likely the last) a Zeiss Telex 6X Sn 488522, should put manufacture sometime early to mid 1915.
It is neatly inscribed to a Ltn Asche.

Glenn - thanks so much
Luke,
I.R. 57 Leutnant d.R. Asche was killed in Wilna (Vilnius) whilst serving with R.I.R. 256 on 11 September 1915.
Regards
Glenn

Hey all. Just checking the 1914 Rangliste there is but one Asche a Lt dR in IR57. Volksbund.de lists a Freiderich Asche Lt dR died in Lithuania in 1915. Also checked IR57 history no Asche is listed as KIA. It doesnt appear IR57 operated in Lithuania. Curious if another Lt Ssche is in the Naval Rangliste. Or what Army Regiments operated in Lithuania in WWI. Cheers. Luc

That would be fantastic if it was PFLHO
Should make it an easier project - hopefully
Excellent Christophe!
Does anyone know if there are PFLHO rolls out there? If so, this ribbon bar could be identified possibly. As the Army/Oldenburg PFLHO/Austrian Order of the Iron Crown combination narrows it down a bit more.

I only have Army Rangliste up to 1914. ID be out of the question with this combo?

Hello:
My vote is the Austrian Order of the Iron Crown. This ribbon bar looks like it may have possibly belonged to a naval officer?
"SPM"
Iron Crown of course.... thanks SPM

Just found a photo of the owner, Oblt. Gert Freiherr von Diepenbroick-Grüter while in Reserve Kavallerieabteilung 78 (centre)

The missing link is found. Thanks so much Andy, than makes alot more sense. I agree difficult t orush to judgement, just with the amount of research I've done in eliminating other potential candidates in the 16th and other yellow piped dragoon regiments, I'm quite confident in this fit. Thanks again for everyone's help!

very interesting , especially under the point of view that he was 12 (twelve!!!) years old when ww1 started in 1914....
Hi Heiko,
Yes the only plausible theories are either he was a late war (ie 1918) entry, or the Oblt listed was a brother of his who joined post 1914?. Research continues.
The man I listed DID assist in writing the 16th's regimental history. Just not sure if he contributed to writing about his older brother's regiment?

Obviously a different person than the Major - it was his son I believe...
Hans-Dietrich Heinz Otto Adam Freiherr von Diepenbroick-Grueter
Helped write the combined regimental history of the 16th Dragoons which also contains the history of the associated Reserve Kavallerieabteilung 78.
Cheers guys,
Luc

As a point of interest, there appears to have been another Freiherr von Diepenbroick-Grueter that doesn't show up on the rangliste. Just picked up a copy of the 16th Dragoner Regt history... lo and behold, at "G" Reserve-Kavallerieabteilung 78
Oblt a.D. Frhr von Diepenbroick-Grueter.
That I believe is the source of my mystery cypher - I've been able to eliminate all other candidates.

Hey guys - thanks for the info - disappointing I thought I had ID'd the owner of my 16th Dragoon Visor ... I know Diepenbroick-Grueter's son was involved in the creating of the WWI regimental history of the 16th Dragoons and with the Major later dying in Hannover the match looked good. Oh well, back to the drawing board .
Thanks again everybody,
Luc

Hi guys - just looking for some information on Majors und Rechtsritters des johanitterordens Georg Ludwig Edmund Theodor Gustav Adam von Diepenbroick-Grueter (* 19. Januar 1865 in Münster; † 7. Juni 1937 in Hannover).
Specifically looking for post 1900 military posting(s), namely a regiment (I'm assuming the 16th Dragoner Regt should figure in there somewhere...)
Thanks guys, the only ranklist I have here is 1914, the two Diepenbroick-Grueter mentioned are definitely not our man above. Given the DOB and rank of Major he should show up in the 1900-1905 (ish?) lists...
Thanks again,
Luc

Great bar and fantastic work finding a picture of the owner.
It should be noted I think I have seen Peckelshiem's helmet before somewhere...
