Here is a mix lot of Zambia medal that was auctioned in London in june 2004.I was there but this lot of 20 awards (there is a 2nd file) went to high that day (700 Pounds + 15 %). First at left : Military Cross (suspension swivel) Second from left : Zambia Air Force Commissioned Service Medal Third from left : I just remember on reverse it was written "For Bravery in the Field" The last at right on bottom row is : Zambia Defense Force Star for Distinguished Service (suspension swivel).I have a later type of this decoration (not british made, and suspension doesn't swivel). On the upper row the medal with the green ribbon is Zambia Police Meritorious Service Medal 1st Type ( 1964-91).After 1991 the effigy of Kenneth Kaunda was replaced by the Coat of Arms, but ribbon remain the same. Zambia Distinguished Service Order 1st Type (1965-91).It's an Officer Class (Officer class is a bronze neck badge). All Zambia Orders have been instituted by Law 347/1965 of 23 october 1965 (1 year after Independence). The Distinguished Service Order is the 4th highest Order of Zambia. This 4 Classes Order has a Grand Commander (G.C.D.S.) with a gilt sash badge & a gilt breast star and a Grand Officer (G.O.D.S.) with a silvered neck badge & a silver breast star. Officer (O.D.S.) is a similar size to Grand Officer neck badge but in bronze. Member(M.D.S.) is a lower size bronze breast badge. Emmanuel

Here is a Member of the Distinguished Service Order.Of course the officer above is wearing a higher class. The first version of the Distinguished Service Order of Zambia had the effigy of First President Kenneth Kaunda in center. After 1991 all Medals & Orders with Kenneth Kaunda have seen his effigy replaced by Coat of Arms. Hello Gentlemen,Zambia & also Ghana are 2 countries from which it is very difficult to get medals. I have been able to "re-compose" the group of medals to this Officer (re-sizing pictures from medal I own and from medals files I host in my computer). From left to right : Zambia Defense Force Proficiency Medal Zambia Air Force Medal of Courage Zambia Air Force Commissioned Service Medal Zambia Defense Force Operations Medal Later on I will post pictures of medals separated ( I own the Zambia Air Force Courage & the Zambia Operation medal). I have the Proficiency medal but with a different ribbon. The problem is that some dealer in South Africa put "fantasy ribbon" on these medal to sell them easier. The sash is the Distinguished Service Order grade of Grand Commander ( G.C.D.S. ) Emmanuel
    10. Hello Gentlemen, long time ago.I think it was in 2003 Spink had this wonderfull set of Order of Jose Delgado with diamonds. Just for eyes pleasure. Emmanuel
    11. Hello Gentlemen here is the list of all Military Insignia from Senegal Army. Of course the SENBATT is not included in this list because it was only awarded to senegalese troops in mission in Lebanon. But the insignia of SENBATT IS uncommon.I have it in my own collection, but I just saw 1 for sale. For my own collection I'am looking for 1st row : left & middle 3rd row : left (the 1st Commando) 4th row : middle 5th row : middle & right 6th row : right 8th row : middle (the one of Etat Major). Emmanuel
    12. Hello again, here I have taken pictures of mine (obverse & reverse).I took the liberty to add your own picture along side mine, because you have the correct ribbon and I don't want to drive fellow collector in mistake. It's a rare Order anyway,I bought it like that. Emmanuel
    13. Hello Eric, what you have at right is the Nishan-e-Minipal 2nd Class, the Order of the Homeland of the Kingdom of Afghanistan, instituted in 1960.It's very hard to get such piece.Even Gustav Tammam doesn't had one. I'am lucky to have one, despite if mine is ribboned with the usually found black/red/green ribbon. Your piece is with the correct ribbon. On the later post I will include the piece that is in my collection. Emmanuel

The second Order instituted after the revision of 1993 was the Order of Merit Burkinabe,or Order of Merit. It awarded for reward less higher merit and always in the lower class with a bar on ribbon saying for which kind of merit the Order was attributed. The Order exist in 5 ranks : Grand Cross,Grand Officer,Commander,Officer & Knight. We know that at least the follwing casp exist : Amitie-Cooperation (friendship & cooperation) , Education , Action Sociale , Administration , Agriculture et Elevage , Santé (health) , Défense , Sécurité On the National Day of Burkina Faso in december 2003 : 1 Grand Officer,3 Commander,5 Officer & 152 Knight of the Order of Merit Burkinabe were awarded. Burkina Faso is one of the few african country who regard his medals as strong national symbol and they give many every year (they not only givve the award document like in some poor country, but they give the medal too). Here you can see the Order of Merit ; rank of Officer with bar "Amitié-Coopération" awarded to the representant of "Ile de Paix" .It's well known charity organisation that gather money for small projet in Africa.Mostly to make people to get water. You can see that this person was also awarded a second medal of Burkina Faso : the Medal of Merit of Local Collectivity.

      BURKINA FASO

In 1993 there was a reform in the award system of Burkina Faso, and all the former "revolutionnnary Orders" were decalred obsolete. They were replaced by a large serie of Order and medals. Former members of these so called revolutionnary Orders could exchange them and take place in the newly instituted Orders. Mainly the new senior Order of Burkina Faso is : National Order of Burkina Faso. It comprise a Collar for the Grand Master and then Grand Cross,Grand Officer,Commander,Officer & Knight. Here you can see a picture of a Grand Cross breast star and an officer with its reverse The Officer has this unique specificity to have a gilded circle inside the rosette + a gilded star in the middle of the rosette. For Knight grade there is a single gilt rosette in the middle of the ribbon (where red meets green). Emmanuel

      BURKINA FASO

Hello Gentlemen,I always regerts that there is not that much activities on the Africa section. So here I will try to entertain you with the National Order of Burkina Faso (ex Upper Volta). This country had an awards system of its own from 1960 till Captain Thomas Sankara took power by a Coup d'Etat in 1983 and changed the name of the country to Burkina Faso ,which means : "the country of the perfectly honest men". Thomas Sankara has developped a serie of Order in a revolutionary style. They were 4 : The Order of the Star of Nahouri (you will see a commandor below) (upper left),and here you see the breast star of the Order of the Star of Nahouri, the Order of the Torch of the Revolution (upper right corner),The Order of Labour (lower left corner) and the Order of Red Star of the Resistence (lower right corner). On the Order of Labor you can read : "La Patrie ou la Mort, Nous Vainquerons" = " Fatherland or Death,we will defeat". These 4 Orders are on display on the Museum of the Legion of Honour in Paris. Thomas Sankara was assasinated in 1987. Emmanuel
