Dear Paul,
I have been trying to remember this book title and just drew a blank. It took me years to finally get into the Hillwood museum to have those extremely nice folks there removing the 1st class badge from its public display and to compare them side by side.
Thanks so much for adding this in order to complete the first online record for the collecting community.

Here the story on the Albert Order with swords on ring. Any decoration with swords on ring is super rare!

Hammer received the SV3 on 1910 and the SA3 on 1905, both without swords. He received the SA2 on 1913
During the war, he received the SV2X on 1915 and t he SA2aX on 1917.

...in that case vanity prevails

Saxony allowed to wear the lower grades of an order together with the higher grades. I would be positive that the bar represents the knights badges he was awarded with initially.

Wenn man diese Adlermalerei und die Feilspuren and den Kreuzarmkanten sieht bracht man kein Gewicht mehr und definitif zu sagen, dass das Ding nicht von vor 1918 ist.
Oops, I was mentaly in a different forum I meant to wirte as already translated above, that this one has the typical characteristics of a fake. That particular eagle painting design as well as the crude workmanship gives it away.

By the way, do I see a maker mark ???
No maker, but French ET mark. I needed the image for my web page. http://www.medalnet.net/Hallmarks.htm

Sorry, but this is a prime example of a forgery contracted out by a certain German medal dealer, way after the end of WWII even.

Military order of st Henry?
in Germany: Imperial: The Orders, Decorations and Medals of The Imperial German States

I like to disagree. In 1957 the reborn Germany passed a law allowing the wear of formerly awarded decorations again. Several companies started making the new decorations again. Most are bronze gilt. You may be able to find catalogs from that time showing accurate pictures of those awards. Of course the Pour le Merite and all higher bravery decorations were part of this, just like the St. Henry.
