    1. According to Metin Erureten's book, the one with a train was "stuck when the Damascus-Mecca railroad reached the town of Maan in 1904".

The other one also features in the same book (page 151) although there seems to be little information other than "medal of Ayasofia tamir (restoration)". So maybe to commemorate the restoration of the Ayasofia mosk which is still a major touristic attraction in Istanbul, near the Topkapi Palace.

Thank you Terry. Following some other medals from my Ottoman Medal Colection. Those are the tree versions of the Crimea War Medal.

      Best regards,

      Artan

    2. hello!

Artan pyetja ime eshte nese numri i dekretit paraardhes ose pasardhes perfaqesonte nje dekorate tjeter domosdoshmerisht apo nje dekret cfaredo te kuvendit?

my question for my friend Artan is whether the previous and succesive decree number belonged to another award neccesary. or to any common decree issued not related to awarding?

      Dear captain,

Dekretet e dekorimeve ishin ne te njeten rradhe me dekretet e tjera dhe jo si renditje apo rregjister me vehte. Pra, psh dekreti 234 mund te ishte dekorim, dekreti 235 mund te ishte emerim, dekreti 236 shpallje ligji, dekreti 237 prape dekorim, e keshytu me rradhe.

      Regards,

      Artan

Will get all the award names in English later. What's interesting... my hypothesis is that 1 decree equals 1 awarding (at least, I've yet to come across documents with the same decree number). This would imply only very, very few awardings! Roughly 200 per year. This would also explain why we see so few award documents. Perhaps only 7.500 awarded? Of course, maybe some medals, etc. were given away without a decree (or document for that matter).

What's "good" to see is that the dates / decree dates are perfectly ascending. So probably awardings were all centralized in Tirana.

Would appreciate if anybody with new docs could PM me:

      - award name

      - awardee name

      - date

      - decree

...both to further expand on the list and, potentially, to reunite groups.

Could somebody please make this a sticky thread?

      Dear Bob,

The standard procedure was to emeted a decree for any awarded person. There are some cases, specialy during 1945-1960) of emeted a group decree. After that period, for any decoration emeted, exist a decree. In Albania does not exist the mode to give decorations without decree.

      Regards,

      Artan

    4. Oh, and I forgot...

The first photo of Hoxha with his dress uniform, I was actually making reference to the last of his three neck badges. So in summation: he is wearing (from top to bottom): Bulgarian Order of 9 September 1944 1st class with swords, Albanian National Hero (the first type), and below that the Yugoslav Order of the National Hero.

Artan, thank you for posting these photos - they are superb and have helped me gain a better understanding and appreciation for Albania's decorations!

    5. Hello Artan - could you show a scan of the real deal (front + reverse) please? I understand you may want to save it for the book. We will appreciate it either way

      Hi Bob and Eric,

I understand what is for a collector the desire to se a rarity. In Albania exist only two pieces of them. One of them is mine. Gold 22 kt, 75 gr. Obv. and rev. are identique.

      Regards,

      Artan

    6. Eric, there is 1-st type of albanian People's Hero between bulgarian order and yugoslavian Hero.

      Hello gentlemans,

1945-1949, First type: Urdhri HERO KOMBETAR (National Hero Order),

1949-1954, Second type: Urdhri HERO I POPULLIT (Peoples Hero Order),

1954-1990, Star: Titulli HERO I POPULLIT (Peoples Hero Title)

      regards,

      Artan

    7. Thanks Eric!

I've read a fair amount about Hoxha, but it's difficult to find out which awards he had.

As I said, reading the criteria, he could claim almost all Albanian awards. But he seems to have been relatively modest in that in photos he isn't bedecked in ribbons or medals. On the cover of his 'with Stalin' memoir he appears to have 8 or 9 ribbons. But as you say some may be foreign awards.

Not even google seems to know!

      Hi Belaruski,

This is a photo of Comrade Enver Hoxha in kolonel-general uniform, model M-47 in 1948.

      Artan.

    8. Are there any pics available of Albanian military uniforms? I am sure they were simple during the time of Hoxha after they abolished rank insignia.

How about uniforms with rank insignia before 1970?

      Hi, STEPHENMILLER,

This is an ex albanian general in a M-66 uniform (the ranks are abolished in 1965). The colar patch are for the Ministry of the Interior colour.

      Best,

      Artan

    9. Welcome Artan! That is a superb photograph! Do you happen to know who he is?

      Cheers,

      Eric

      Dear Eric,

My general is Major-general Tuk Jakova (1914-1959), dead in prison.

The other General (pics from BOB) is major-general Gjin Marku, dead in prison in the '80-es.

The officer (pics from ULSTERMAN), is a leitnant in a M-44 uniform, local production, used in 1944-1945 period.

    10. Interesting pic from the main museum in Tirana. A wall of pics had has subtitle "ex important functionaries of the Albanian Communist Party and Albanian State sentenced and killed by Enver Hoxha regime"

      Dear sir,

This uniform is realy a "Victory Parade" Uniform. In 1947, for the albanian generals arrived from USSR a number of this uniform.

Here enclosed, a photo of an albanian general in this uniform. This uniform where used from 1947 till 1955.
