What's the serial number?
Rick, sorry it took me so long to get back to you. Work's been hectic here for the past few days. The serial number on the Red Star is 2204712. Thanks for your help

What's the serial number?
I'll have to get back with you tomorrow. I'm at work, & the star is at home.

It all depended on when. Read the Soviet Researched Awards section and you will see many specific examples of citations, both for "something" and for 15 years routine service between November 1944 to December 1956. There were also later "jubilee" awards in 1968 etc for Unassisted Breathing.
In virtually any case except consulting the chart of numbers and dates permanently posted here, only research on a specific serial number will reveal why it was granted.
Thanks, Rick. My Star is one of the first pieces in my collection, yet I know next to nothing about them.

What were the prerequisits for being awarded an Order of the Red Star? Was this something that was handed out just for making it to morning formation on time, or was it necessary to actually acomplishe something worthwhile?

Any opinions on the 1957 EK II that's listed in the new section of Thirdreichmedals.com? He wants GPS 99:00 for it. I tried downloading a picture of it, but the file was too large. Could a few people that know what they're doing with 1957's please take a look at it and let me know? Thanks.

Some collectors believe that it was also used to help keep the belt from sliding around the tunic - especially with ammo pouches attached. These leather tabs were discontinued in '42.....If you happen to see any dated '43 - '45, then those are reproductions!
Hope that helps.
Rob
Thanks for the information, Rob. That business about being discontinued in 1942 is a good piece of info to know.

From what I understand they served no practical purpose other than to make space for the manufacturer's name and date of manufacture. They do add interest, though.
Thanks for the info. I couldn't for the life of me think of a useful purpose for them.

Could someone please explain to me the purpose of the leather tongue that one sometimes sees atatched to German belt buckles?

My first deer rifle was a Springfield M-1903 A/3. A very accurate rifle, and I've kicked myself often for selling it off when I was in college.
