      He Served 1940-41 with Inf.Rgt.48 of the .12 . Inf.Div., May-July 40 active in Luxembourg and France, based in France till June 41 and then sent to Russia (Demjansk). 1942-43 he was CO.of 1./Inf.Btl.550 z.b.V., an independent penal (rehabilitation) unit, formed Nov.41 and active in central Russia (a.o. Witebsk). Military convicts got a chance to rehabilitate themselves by joining these "special duties" units that had to carry out the most hazardous tasks such as mine-clearance under enemy fire, close-combat assault actions, etc.
