    1. I found this on the BBc webiste, anf thought it might be an interesting topic of discussion............. Coin shows Cleopatra's ugly truth Antony and Cleopatra, one of history's most romantic couples, were not the great beauties that Hollywood would have us believe, academics have said. A study of a 2,000-year-old silver coin found the Egyptian queen, famously portrayed by Elizabeth Taylor, had a pointed chin, thin lips and sharp nose. Her Roman lover, played by Richard Burton, had bulging eyes, thick neck and a hook nose. The tiny coin was studied by experts at Newcastle University. The size of a modern 5p piece (18mm or 0.7in), the artefact from 32BC was in a collection belonging to the Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle, which is being researched in preparation for the opening of a new Great North Museum. Clare Pickersgill, the university's assistant director of archaeological museums, said: "The popular image we have of Cleopatra is that of a beautiful queen who was adored by Roman politicians and generals. "Recent research would seem to disagree with this portrayal, however." The university's director of archaeological museums, Lindsay Allason-Jones, said: "The image on the coin is far from being that of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. "Roman writers tell us that Cleopatra was intelligent and charismatic, and that she had a seductive voice but, tellingly, they do not mention her beauty. "The image of Cleopatra as a beautiful seductress is a more recent image." The silver denarius coin would have been issued by the mint of Mark Antony. On one side is the head of Mark Antony, bearing the caption "Antoni Armenia devicta" meaning "For Antony, Armenia having been vanquished". Cleopatra appears on the reverse of the coin with the inscription "Cleopatra Reginae regum filiorumque regum", meaning "For Cleopatra, Queen of kings and of the children of kings". The university hopes more forgotten treasures will come to light before the Great North Museum opens in 2009. The Roman coin is on display in Newcastle University's Shefton Museum from 14 February.
    2. Anyone know anything about Cleopatra coins?
    3. Had the same problem with the GWF, however have assess now and although I can`t find the thread Ulster refers to have posted a new thread, with the details `we` know, will post any relevant replies here. So fingers crossed & stand by................
    4. Hi Guys, picked up one of these for a song, the other day. Nice piece of history, thought I`d share it with you...
    5. JFK was famously assassinated in Dallas Texas on November 22nd 1963. Almost everyone, not just Americans, can tell you what they were doing when they heard the news about JFK's assassination. The USA has a convention, if not a law, that living persons are never portrayed on their coins. This dates back to the American Revolution and the power of monarchies. The designs on US coins intended for circulation are only changed very infrequently, so it was with surprising speed that the US government decided to put his head onto the half dollar, and do so the very next year. 1964 is the definitive date of Kennedy half dollars, it was the last of the all-silver US half dollars, and the original Kennedy memorial coin. Later dates of Kennedy halves are silver clad or base metal. The 1964 Kennedy is the only one struck in 90% pure silver. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kennedy_half_dollar
    6. I picked up one of these for $30, but I`ve seen them go for a cheap as $20. Granted for the 2003 type, which I believe there are proported to be somewhere between 5000 & 10000!! Thats a lot of signing. The 2004 type theres something like 500, but I don`t know what connection Lynch had with 2004
    7. Hopefully they take it one stage further and have something for all the guys that are being wounded!
    8. Ebay charges for this coin ?19,000 :speechless1:

    10. Hi Guys, Can anyone tell me whether you`d get the war on Terror medal(s) & the Iraq medal for the same tour?
    11. Well well well, there we have it!!
    12. Is this a pukka German WWII sleeve cuff? By that I mean did such a thing exist?
    13. Hi Doc, thanks for your reply. Think your right about the Balkans. This 2 star CMB is a mystery!!
    14. Do you have to have qualified for the EMB, in or to get the CMB? Who can get these awards? Is it medics only, or could a grunt get one for patching his buddy up? "The directive was again altered in 1969 to specify that only one award of the Combat Medical Badge is authorized for service in Vietnam, Laos, the Dominican Republic, Korea (subsequent to 4 January 1969), El Salvador, Grenada, Panama, Southwest Asia, and Somalia regardless of whether an individual has served in one or more of these areas." I assume South West Asia, would be desert storm? That would have blanked out any other service during that period, so Somalia is out. The next would have been OIF, so theres two.....have no idea where the third award has come from? The Balkans maybe?
    15. Hi Doc, Yes I was under that impression as well. Lets say he did Iraq I & Iraq II, that would give him 2 awards, would that be the badge & 1 star, or the badge & 2 stars? If its the latter then this guy has 3 CMB (not clear in picture, as its too small, but full size pic was too big to post the full hit, but leave it with me, I`ll try and cut and paste). Was a CMB issued for the that whole hawk down business, maybe he got one there to?
    16. Can`t see any pics of anyone wearing both, but I did find this that I thought was cool!!!
    17. Found this.... A guy with a CMB and 2 stars? Doesn`t look old enough, I thought they only issued them for Vietnam, Iraq I & II or Afghanistan, so how`s he managed to win it three times?
    18. Just out of interest, did the US issue acampaign medal for Bosnia? If so do US troops wear both the Nato & the US medal for this campaign? I assume then that the same would be true for Afghanistan, but what about Iraq? I know Britain, didn`t issue a medal for Bosnia, her soldiers just wear the Nato medal, however, they aren`t allowed to wear the Afghanistan one, as they are issued with an OSM for that campaign. Now assuming that you qualified for the Iraq medal on one tour and the Nato for another tour, then you would be able to wear both?
    19. Now that is very interesting, will have to surf the net to see if I can find any pics of anyone wearing both.
    20. No worries, glad to be of help to someone.
