I had in mind to buy a badge similar to this from Jorg Sammler but I was not sure about the design of the flag and of the gun . The pin system is an ordinary one for the badges mm with angular letters

Looks OK. 5 U-Flotille was a training flotilla where newly commissioned boats were prepared for front line service.

Can't read the sailor's name clearly from this image. Have you tried checking it against any of the crew list databases ?

The name is Otto Fromme . I have found on UBoot waffe Otto Fromme U596 .

This site does not include all members of the UBoote . For example I have a few docs of which I am unable to find the link between the sailor and the Uboat on which he was aboard .

Thomas in Kiel has a list of over 20000 UBoot members but he has not the link sailor-Uboot.

Can you suggest me other possible sources where I can find this link ?

According to you is the doc signed by K H Moehle ? I have never come across the Moehle signature .

I should have added that mine has a different hinge then yours, but the hinge on yours is an accepted variant in terms of hardware.

Many things are wrongs on this badge, not an original IMO.

The assembly pin and the excess of soldering are not unusual , I am doubtful about the space between eagle and wreath, the flag ,the rudder and the mark (?) incuse in a little square .

I agree . I think a zinc type as you showed sometime ago. The problem was that the owner believes the badge a Maybauer's manufacture .

Personally I don't like these. I did have one myself in the dim and distant past and initially thought it was good mainly because of the nice pin/hinge set up, though the retaining clip was a bit iffy.

The killer for me was coming across several of these with the swastika drilled out to take small imitation diamonds in an attempt to recreate the U-Boat Badge with Diamonds, all identical and all with the 53 in a box mark. No one would take a genuine badge, set the swastika with fake stones then sell it for less than the value of a regular original U-Boat badge.

Somewhere I may have an image of one of these fakes saved. I'll try to find it.
