Hi there!

Can anyone help me with the identification of this medal? It's presumably an unofficial one. Is it Belgian? Or French? French inscription: "je sourirai quand même" on the front, "les plus grands mutiles et invalides de guerre - reconnaissance" on the back, with the engraved name of the recipient and a date 16-12-69.

Thank you so much for your answer. I believe that with respect to the black emailed bars, they are smaller than the one for the mothers' whose son died. On the Conmmemorative Medal they are used to indicate Prisioners of War status, one bar for every 6 months.

This decoration was instituted in 1856, while the civic decorations in 1867. According to Borné, only 1143 Crosses and 917 medals were awarded to the army and the guard-civique.

Hi Bill,

I think you're right! To much strain can cause the ball to break. Impossible to fit the ring without damaging the back side of the ball.

There are no signs of sawing. I think it just is a manufacturing failure. Any one else with such a problem?

It the ball is definitely not closed, but it doesn't seem to be a crack. It look that it never has been closed at all. A manufacturing error? I don't know.
