      Hi Laurence,

David's question (thank you David) started me on a quest as I was sure I had an example in the collection, I was surprised to find I do, in fact, not have one; so much for my memory.  I thought that perhaps I could take a photo of an example from Ed's book (giving full credit of course) but was even more surprised to find none there either.  This leds me to think that it has to be quite rare indeed.  I had to search but there is mention of the Suraksha clasp to the Samanya Seva in Ed's book but it is under the Garaj Star on page 111 near the bottom of the page.

      Regards

      Brian

Thanks for that Brian I missed that.

If you go to page 106 you will find it states (3rd paragraph) "The existing Samanya Seva medal......could not be awarded in this case since issues of political expediency....."

      Cheers

    2. Hello David

      Welcome to GMIC.  :)

      In response to your question:

The Sangram Medal was awarded for service during the 1971 conflict between India and Pakistan. The medal was given to all categories of personnel who served in the military, paramilitary forces, police, and civilians in service in the operational areas of Kashmir, Punjab, Gujarat, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram or Tripura between 3 Dec 1971 and 20 Dec 1972 - both dates inclusive - Those who had qualified for the Poorvi Star, and the Paschimi Star automatically qualified for the Sangram medal.

The Swatantrata Jayanti Medal - 25th Independence Anniversary Medal was issued to all those who qualified on the 15 Aug 1972.

So if you did not serve in one of the previously mentioned areas you would not receive the Sangram medal but would still receive the  Swatantrata Jayanti Medal.

      Hope this helps some

      Cheers

A collegue came up with the sollution.

The medal was a commemorative medal for the 25 years of the inauguration of the reign of Leopold I.

Ribbon is 37 mm large (in total!); green 1mm/amarant 6mm/ green 23mm/amarant 6mm and green1mm.

Well here is my issue and I am not saying you are incorrect, however on Hendricks page it shows a different ribbon than the one posted.......Could the ribbon be different between the cross and the medal?

http://users.skynet.be/hendrik/  It's in the Leo I section of "Other Medals".

If its a real one it would be extremely rare as it seems only 1000 were issued!!

      Cheers

    4. Mit Befehl vom 17.Februar 1942 wurde die Aufstellung der „Kampfgruppe Jeckeln“ unter Führung des HSSPF Ostland, SS-Obergruppenführer u. Gen.d.Pol.

       (Friedrich Husemann, Die guten Glaubens waren,Geschichte der SS-Polizei-Division, Band I 1939 – 1942, Munin-Verlag Osnabrück, 2.Auflage 1984, S. 210 – 212)

       (Husemann, Podiv, I, S.211-212,s.a. Karte S.149,s.a. 121.ID, S. 97 ff)

       (Husemann, PolDiv, I.,S. 198 )

(Husemann, PolDiv, I, S. 212)

      A very rough translation

With instruction from February 17, 1942, the formation of the "Battle Group Jeckeln" under the leadership of HSSPF Ostland Gen.d.Pol was obergruppenführer u.. Friedrich Jeckeln, ordered to detach except the SS Police Division also 58.InfDiv of the Leningrad Front in 18.Armee can.

The KGr. units were originally, according telex of 18th Army from February 18, 1942, the fed V. / LSSAH (1 000 men), the SS Legion Norway (1 100 men) and 5 police battalions (each 600 men ), which in time v 19 - were brought 02/24/1942 in air transport and immediately incorporated into the front..

This battalion should be eingesezt such that train by train could be extracted:

      a) the SS Police Division with staff without artillery and without belonging to the group is set battalion of Basse Dörner

      b) three additional battalions.

The divisional headquarters of the SS Police Division was extract accelerates.

The execution of this command was then carried out as follows:

      V. / LSSAH to 225.ID, Leningrad Front, Section Uritsk

      3 PolBtl to 122.ID

      1 PolBtl to 121.ID

      1 PolBtl with SS FrwLeg.Norwegen "to 58.ID

The Pol.ArtRgt remained grounded in the previous assembly areas, was the ARKO 18 subordinate and dependent on cooperation with the 121.und 58.InfDiv. The portion of PolDiv was initially taken in equal parts, by the 121.und 58.InfDiv with.

(Friedrich Husemann, in good faith, were history of SS Police Division, Volume I 1939-1942, Munin-Verlag Osnabrück, 2nd edition 1984, pp 210-212)

With his staff accepts SS Ogruf.Jeckeln March 4, 1942 from 9:00 clock, the command of the ex-cut the 58.ID and after their disentanglement on the same day the entire section of the coast up to and including Pushkin ("Constantine" position?) enough.

      The battle group. were subject:

      - IR 320, 212.ID with 3 Battalion, PolBtl 306 PolBtl 121 Rgtseinheiten 13, 14 / IR 320, 212.ID..

      - RgtsStab 409th, 122.ID with AA 158, 58.ID, V. / LSSAH, PolBtl 56 and 310, FrwLeg.Norwegen, PolBtl 305
      - PzJgAbt 158 (2 trains), 58.ID, parts PzJgAbt SS PolDiv
      - 2 leiIG-, 2 SIG trains / SS PolDiv, 5 lei.IG-, 3 s.IG trains / 58.ID
      - AR 158 -. 1 lei.Bttr, 1 s.Bttr / 58.ID, AR SS PolDiv

Right then lay the 121.InfDiv. Soon also occurred in a KGr.Jeckeln changes, units changed their sections, others were abge-coated and supplied new.

      (Husemann, Podiv, I, S.211-212, sa map p.149, sa 121.ID, S. 97 ff)

The first indication of the GR 538, I have to start later and he is also the only one of its kind:

On April 25, 1942 at 0.00 clock that KGr.Jeckeln took over the whole stretch of coast in addition, since ie until Oranienbaumer boiler. For this purpose, apparently the FrwLeg.Norwegen the battle group. newly assumed this Legion is a few weeks later replaced by the III. / IR 538 and took over after several days of rest from 05.26.1942 the portion of the II. / IR 538 before Pulkovo, where still the second (fork) and 3. Battery (Etthöfer) of I. / Pol.AR were in their firing positions.

      (Husemann, PolDiv, I., p. 198)

The KGr.Jeckeln there until 08/13/42 and shelter during the whole time the L.AK, AOK 18 (Husemann, PolDiv, I, p 212)
