Months ago a friend mentioned he had his Fathers medals (in the attic somewhere) one of them being the MM which he thinks was awarded in Italy WWll. He let me have a look at them to-day, all rattling around in an old cardboard box where they have been for 50 years, this is the inscription on the edge of the MM:

    S. SJT. A. HANDLEY 4745742 Y and L R

Other than his Dad, who died in the 1960's, won it in Italy and he was in the York and Lancaster Regiment he has no idea how or when it was awarded.

This is way outside my field of interest (Masonic Jewels) and wouldn't have a clue, but I was hoping one of you Gentlemen may have the information at your fingertips....Many thanks Guys

    Hi Humber,

Your friend's Dad may well have had an interesting war if he picked up the MM. This would have been announced in the London Gazette, archives of which can be searched here: http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/index.asp?webType=0

That will confirm this entitlement, but if you want more detailed info you could try asking for help from a collector who specialises in the Y&L regiment, or try getting in touch with the regimental museum, if they have one.

Good luck and please share some photos if you have them!

    Cheers

Hi Gilbert...I can't thank you enough, popped in his serial number and there he was, 29th June 1944. He is coming round at the weekend, I will scan the medals and add to post.

And with the LG date you can get the recommendation from the National Archives (also PRO). But this will require actually doing research, looking it up, printing it out. And these days, so many expect everything to be free and easy and on the internet! :(

I would really like to contact member 'Humber' regarding this set of medals.

He appears not have to have posted for quite some time, would anyone have other contact details for him please?

    Many thanks

Hi Badger - hope you are well. I have checked through the Index and Humber is still shown as a Member. However, he does

not seem to have posted for quite a while. Perhaps leave a short message for him and also an IM. Mervyn
