tynesideirish Posted August 13, 2008 Posted August 13, 2008 (edited) I don't think it would have been agression, more the "Who the **** do you think you are?" type of thing. Lt Col Wilde was of course a trained Parachutist and had even compleated Pathfinder training in Canada, but the RSM WO1 Griffiths was very anti Para. Here's that badge. Graham Stewart Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 (edited) Hi lads - recently acquired new RRF patch 2 inches square. Edited August 16, 2008 by Graham Stewart
Graham Stewart Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 (edited) Time for some RRF nostalgia. These were given to me by Ed Forrest formerly 1st RNF & 1st RRF and were originally on slides. Possibly taken 1967/68 after 1st RNF had returned from Aden to UK. Edited August 19, 2008 by Graham Stewart
Graham Stewart Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 This was probably band dress rehearsal taken before the first photo. The No.2's being worn are quite different to later issue in that the material is much rougher. I have Ed's first old set in the loft.
Graham Stewart Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 This is probably amalgamation day St.Georges Day 1968, as you will note the different coloured hackles being worn. Obviously seem to be the youngest lads of each regiment parading in full dress(apart from fur caps) for the occassion.
Graham Stewart Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 A sight not seen since 1968 all of the hackles being worn with No.2's and the old Fusilier Brigade cap badge, before they became Royal Regiment of Fusiliers.
Graham Stewart Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 Not sure about this one. A Land Rover CP and two operators, certainly taken sometime after the introduction of the new DPM combat dress.
Graham Stewart Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 What all old Fusiliers hold dear to their hearts. The Colours decked out for St.Georges Day. This is infact the cover of a Xmas greetings card.Nice to see if anybody can identify any of the lads in the previous photo's??
tynesideirish Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 Here's those dear old colours being escorted onto the square at Happy Valley, Cypus Geordies day 1987. Spud, Smiler and RSM Keating
tynesideirish Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 A nice shot of the regimental tracksuit being modeled by CSM W Coy.
tynesideirish Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 Two well known Z Coy personalities Auchnacloy 1984
Graham Stewart Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 1st Bn, RRF - Howe Barracks, Canterbury, St.Georges Day 1990 - The Drummers Colour.
Graham Stewart Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 (edited) Same time & place - Drum Major, 1st Bn, RRF. The hackle should infact follow the bearskin up and over the crown, finishing over on the upper opposite side, which is how the old 5th Fusiliers wore theirs. Plus his fur cap grenade appears to be missing. Edited August 19, 2008 by Graham Stewart
Graham Stewart Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 (edited) Same time & place - L/Cpl Drummer, with a jaunty look. Anyone got a spare drummers Balderick plate with badge? Edited August 19, 2008 by Graham Stewart
Graham Stewart Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 1st Bn, RRF Band & Corps of Drums - St.Georges Day 1990.
Graham Stewart Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 (edited) C.O.'s Northumbrian Piper - St.Georges Day 1990. I actually have a plaid brooch as worn here. The back of the grenade had the lugs removed, was then filled with resin and a large medal bar, with pin, inserted into the resin and screwed into position. Edited August 19, 2008 by Graham Stewart
Graham Stewart Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 The C.O. 1st Bn, RRF - St.Georges Day 1990.
Graham Stewart Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 March past of the Colours, 1st Bn, RRF - St.Georges Day 1990. I didn't include the Bn Pioneer as Leigh has already covered that one.All of these post card photo's were originally taken by Brian L.Davis, who is more familiarly known for his book "British Army Uniforms & Insignia of WWII". He also did a lot of stuff on German uniforms etc of WWII.
tynesideirish Posted August 30, 2008 Posted August 30, 2008 Here's a photo of the Pioneers at the 40th Anniversary march through Newcastle. The Aprons seem poor quality and have lost the badges and the Pioneer Sgt has lost his beard. Photo courtesy of Mr Gannon.
tynesideirish Posted August 30, 2008 Posted August 30, 2008 (edited) Drummie the band and his men! Photo Mr Gannon. Edited August 30, 2008 by tynesideirish
tynesideirish Posted August 30, 2008 Posted August 30, 2008 The Escort to the Colour and the Colour. Newcastle Upon Tyne Civic Centre. Incidently where I was married! Photo Mr Gannon
Graham Stewart Posted August 30, 2008 Posted August 30, 2008 Nice photo's TI and have to agree regarding the Pioneers. Whats gone wrong there then? No scarlet, no beard, no badge, incorrect apron and what on earth are they doing with those gauntlets???Pioneer of the 5th Foot c.1812. Appears that the apron wasn't white at all.
Graham Stewart Posted August 30, 2008 Posted August 30, 2008 Taking a massive leap forward in time to post 1881 and a beautiful study by Simkins of the Northumberland Fusiliers. This is when uniformity works well and looks good, especially the Pioneer Sgt.
Graham Stewart Posted August 30, 2008 Posted August 30, 2008 A bigger leap forward to 1990 and how the Pioneer Sgt, 1st Bn, RRF used to look. Still very smart.
