I don't think it would have been agression, more the "Who the **** do you think you are?" type of thing. Lt Col Wilde was of course a trained Parachutist and had even compleated Pathfinder training in Canada, but the RSM WO1 Griffiths was very anti Para.

Time for some RRF nostalgia. These were given to me by Ed Forrest formerly 1st RNF & 1st RRF and were originally on slides. Possibly taken 1967/68 after 1st RNF had returned from Aden to UK.

This was probably band dress rehearsal taken before the first photo. The No.2's being worn are quite different to later issue in that the material is much rougher. I have Ed's first old set in the loft.

This is probably amalgamation day St.Georges Day 1968, as you will note the different coloured hackles being worn. Obviously seem to be the youngest lads of each regiment parading in full dress(apart from fur caps) for the occassion.

A sight not seen since 1968 all of the hackles being worn with No.2's and the old Fusilier Brigade cap badge, before they became Royal Regiment of Fusiliers.

Same time & place - Drum Major, 1st Bn, RRF. The hackle should infact follow the bearskin up and over the crown, finishing over on the upper opposite side, which is how the old 5th Fusiliers wore theirs. Plus his fur cap grenade appears to be missing.

C.O.'s Northumbrian Piper - St.Georges Day 1990. I actually have a plaid brooch as worn here. The back of the grenade had the lugs removed, was then filled with resin and a large medal bar, with pin, inserted into the resin and screwed into position.

All of these post card photo's were originally taken by Brian L.Davis, who is more familiarly known for his book "British Army Uniforms & Insignia of WWII". He also did a lot of stuff on German uniforms etc of WWII.

Nice photo's TI and have to agree regarding the Pioneers. Whats gone wrong there then? No scarlet, no beard, no badge, incorrect apron and what on earth are they doing with those gauntlets???

Taking a massive leap forward in time to post 1881 and a beautiful study by Simkins of the Northumberland Fusiliers. This is when uniformity works well and looks good, especially the Pioneer Sgt.
