This is an oil painting one of my in-laws owns. I took a photo of it many years back but can't recall who it is (the in-law is unavailable for comment). Can someone remind me who this distinguished gentleman is?

That is the tragic Kaiser Friedrich III (1831-1888) who ruled only for 3 months in 1888. Married to one of Queen Victoria's daughters, their son was Kaiser Wilhelm II.

It is generally accepted that if Friedrich had lived--and to the full lifespan of his father and his son--there would never have been a World War.
