Guest Rick Research Posted January 6, 2008 Posted January 6, 2008 As a reminder of how closely Western and Eastern rites parallel each other after a millenium and a half...For those of you who are not "Mall Christians" celebrating by retail advertising display schedules, today (6 January) is also Epiphany by the Western Church calendar-- the day upon which the Three Wise Men (not having had much luck with THEIR prototype "Onstar" ) finally turned upBearing Gifts."On the 12th day of Christmas."Yeah, THAT one.Shakespeare? "Twelfth Night?"The day our Western European ancestors actually had FUN after 12 days of extended church observances... for hundreds upon hundreds upon hundreds of all but forgotten years. From a lonely bastion of Christendom in the dark (literally) ages... lights blazing for one last night...Rejoice! Rejoice!

Rejoice!Yeah, we've often had neighbors and friends ask, "Why is it January and you still have your Christmas decorations up?" Most seem confused or lost when we say, "Because Christmas isn't over until the Feast of the Epiphany!" We ususally get, "Huh, Feast of what???"
