Richarddwh Posted March 29, 2008 Posted March 29, 2008 I recently acquired some wound medals, the one on the right looks fine to me, zinc, with a small maker mark, W&A, on the rim. The one on the left gives me some concern. While it has a lot of detail, the rim has an unfinished look to it, it also looks darker than the one on the right. I would be keen to hear if anyone has seen these reproduced, for an inexpensive medal I would be suprised. Any opinions would be welcome.
Verdun16 Posted March 29, 2008 Posted March 29, 2008 Hi, Both look fine to me. I have owned many that looked like one or the other of yours and were with or without a mintmark. I suspect that one type is post-war made,Bryan
Richarddwh Posted March 29, 2008 Author Posted March 29, 2008 Bryan, thanks for your response, I suppose I was just a bit worried about the rim being unfinished and slightly ugly looking. However, the ribbon looked fine and had been stitched in place. I feel happier now!
Verdun16 Posted March 29, 2008 Posted March 29, 2008 Are they both with the ribbon for one wound or?Bryan
Guest Rick Research Posted March 29, 2008 Posted March 29, 2008 I never noticed a maker mark on the rim before-- now you're going to make me dig mine out and look! I've got a Troop Cross with the upside down shamrock/clover with each petal lettered BSW of Schneider Brothers in Vienna-- still being used on their products in WW2.
Verdun16 Posted March 29, 2008 Posted March 29, 2008 Rick, Would that have been a later issued piece? Seem to recall from somewhere that the Troop Crosses were also made in the late 1930s, maybe after being absorbed into Germany,Bryan
Guest Rick Research Posted March 29, 2008 Posted March 29, 2008 I don't think so, because they used the same shamrock mark on WW1 wartime-made troop unit cap pins.
Richarddwh Posted March 29, 2008 Author Posted March 29, 2008 Bryan, they are both for one wound. I think I would have been even more paranoid had the suspect one had a ribbon denoting several wounds!
Elmar Lang Posted April 2, 2008 Posted April 2, 2008 Both medals are original. The crudely finished one looks like a piece from the latest wartime period.Never forget that most awards of the Verwundetenmedaille took place after the end of the war.Best wishes,EnzoBryan, they are both for one wound. I think I would have been even more paranoid had the suspect one had a ribbon denoting several wounds!
Verdun16 Posted April 2, 2008 Posted April 2, 2008 Richarddwh, Here are a few of mine to compare. First, no stripes for sickness or injury,Bryan
Verdun16 Posted April 2, 2008 Posted April 2, 2008 And five for five. Too bad it's a replacement ribbon,Bryan
Richarddwh Posted April 2, 2008 Author Posted April 2, 2008 A nice set Bryan, particularly like the mini. Out of interest are they all smooth edged versions?
Verdun16 Posted April 2, 2008 Posted April 2, 2008 Hi, I think these all are but since they are in storage at the moment I can't confirm this,Bryan
Verdun16 Posted April 2, 2008 Posted April 2, 2008 This is the only mini of this medal I have been able to find in 13 years of collecting A-H medals. Got lucky I guess on finding this one,Bryan
