leigh kitchen Posted April 7, 2008 Posted April 7, 2008 Actually, he may have a "Long Lee Enfield or a P14", compare the rifles in these photos with your mans:Long Lee Enfield http://www.home-guard.org.uk/hg/pics/lib001.jpgP17 http://www.home-guard.org.uk/hg/pics/lib007.jpgP14 http://www.deactivated-guns.co.uk/detail/P14_and_sling.htm The Home Guard were issued all 3 of these rifles, mainly the P17.The P14 looked almost identical to the P17.The P14 was in 303 calibre, produced during the closing years of WWI, mainly by America under contract to the British.The P17 was an American produced 30.06 calibre version of the P14.The P17 had a red band painted around the woodwork in British use, to indicate that it did'nt take the standard British 303 ammunition.
