Stijn David Posted July 12, 2008 Posted July 12, 2008 Hello, Is there anyone who can give me more information on the following person: * J.D.McLaren, Temporary Second Lieutenant, Machine Gun Corps. He should have been awarded the MC on 4 june 1918.A few questions on this person:* Is this correct?* What otehr medals did he have?* Did he survive the war?* etc...All information is welcome and greatly appreciated Cordial greetings and thanks in advance,
Tony Posted July 12, 2008 Posted July 12, 2008 I don't really have time to check more as I'm off out now and for some reason can't access the ancestry site for his MIC. The only (nearest) J D McLaren I found on the CWGC was from the Canadian MGC and a Private:Name - McLAREN, J D Rank - Private Number - 901395 Date of death - 11/10/1918 Age - 23 Unit - Canadian Machine Gun Corps Nationality - Canadian Buried - D. 36. QUEANT COMMUNAL CEMETERY BRITISH EXTENSIONTony
Tony Posted July 12, 2008 Posted July 12, 2008 Finally got on the site.John Duncan McLaren 33rd MGC.If you would like a larger copy of the MIC, pm me your email address.Tony
Tony Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 As he's not on Soldiers Died either he must have survived. Tony
Stijn David Posted July 13, 2008 Author Posted July 13, 2008 Hello, Thank you for this very fine information => it seems you guys did find my guy So his complete name was: John Duncan McLaren and it seems he was with the 33 rd (Regiment? / Batallion?) MGC I have no experience at all with such medal cards. Is there any information on other awards from this brave soldier? Or does anyone know iff a unit history does exist for the unit as referred towrds? It would certainly be fun to know the act for wich he received the Military Cross. This soldiers award document has surfaced in Belgium, will try to get pictures of it to post here Cordial greetings,
leigh kitchen Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 (edited) Interesting, I aquired a 1914 Star trio with LSGC & 2 x MID a few months ago - that man was commissioned from the ranks & transferred into the 33rd Bn MGC as Honorary Lt Quarter Master.I'll dig the group out. Here's his MIC: Edited July 13, 2008 by leigh kitchen
leigh kitchen Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 Reverse:I bought this group from a dealer in Canada.
censlenov Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 I'm not so sure i agree that its definately John Duncan MclarenI've found a John David Mclaren Gazetted for and MC in Sept 1918 which would fall in nicely of the June recommendation.10986 SUPPLEMENT TO THE LONDON GAZETTE, 16 SEPTEMBER, 1918.T./2nd Lt. John David McLaren, M.G.'CFor conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during an enemy attack. He rallied infantry, redisposed them in defence, and checked the enemy's advance while ammunition lasted. He did fine work. SUPPLEMENT TO THE LONDON GAZETTE, 15 DECEMBER, 1920. 12377MACHINE GUN CORPS (INFANTRY).Temp. 2nd'Lt. J. D. McLaren, M.C. to be temp. Lt. 26 Mar. 1919.SUPPLEMENT TO THE LONDON GAZETTE, 3 OCTOBER, 1917.. 10243War Office, 3rd October,. 1917.REGULAR FORCES:The undermentioned Cadets to be temp. 2nd Lts. (attd.). 29. Aug. 1917 :?.MGC John Duncan McLaren. With that said the Gazette is notorious for typos and as i could only find the "Duncan" MIC and not the "David" MIC I think this may be one of those times.I love researching British medals feel free to pm me when ever you need some help.
Tony Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 Chris,The LG sends me crackers and I sometimes compare it to a nightmare, if the person I'm searching for can't be found within the first hour or so.Tony
