It was awarded to all civilian and military personnel who participated in the defense od Warsaw, during its occupation by the Germans and for its liberation. It is a bronze medal. The OBVERSE shows the Warsaw mermaid holding a sword in the right hand and a shield in the left hand. Below it are the waves of the Wisla river. The years 1939-1945 are at the top of the medal and the word ZA WARSZAWE (For Warsaw) at the bottom.The REVERSE has the words R.P., OBRONCOM, BOJOWNIKOM and OSWOBODZICIELOM ( Polish Republic for its Defenders, Warriors and Liberators) written in four lines with an oak leaf below. The ribbon is red with a yellow stripe near the edges. Ther are two versions of this medal. The first version was blank on the reverse and others differ in the size and style of lettering. 131,242 medals were awarded. The medal is 33mm in diameter. Doc
