Rittmeister Posted September 25, 2008 Posted September 25, 2008 I found this soldier between several Belgian POW's but that cap and symbol don't look Belgian to me. Could it be British? I don't think the Belgian Army had any caps like these in 1914.
jagwca Posted September 25, 2008 Posted September 25, 2008 The cap appears to be a naval type but the badge is "Middlesex Regiment"John
Graham Stewart Posted September 26, 2008 Posted September 26, 2008 Agree with John its the cap badge of the Middlesex Regiment.
Rittmeister Posted September 26, 2008 Author Posted September 26, 2008 Thanks guys for the quick answer! Could it be 4th battalion / Middlesex regiment? I assume this soldier must have been captured during the retreat from Mons/Belgium in 1914 and ended up between Belgian POW's.
Rittmeister Posted September 26, 2008 Author Posted September 26, 2008 Here's another British POW but with a different symbol on his cap. What could it be?
leigh kitchen Posted September 27, 2008 Posted September 27, 2008 (edited) Looks Russian, rather than British. Is there anything on the photo that dates it specifically to 1914? It seems to date from later in the war, with a variety of nationalities shown. The Middlesex Regiment man in the first photo could be wearing the dark blue uniform & cap provided to British POWs by Britain. Rittmeister Posted January 1, 2009 Author Posted January 1, 2009 Same situation - different image, who can identify the British regiment? The symbol looks like a horse?
leigh kitchen Posted January 4, 2009 Posted January 4, 2009 (edited) At first glance, 18th Hussars? Edited January 4, 2009 by leigh kitchen
