In this role, he engrossed the copy of Declaration of Independence that was signed by the Continental Congress and is now on display in the National Archives. Matlack is also known to have penned in 1775 George Washington's commission as Commander-in-Chief of the Army of the United Colonies (Continental Army), among other important documents of the time. 1
