hazmatmess Posted July 1, 2009 Posted July 1, 2009 Looking to obtain one of these badges. Found this site. Some say they come with a "guarantee of authenticity" others don't. I would like to buy a true wartime piece so after reading the posts on here, I would like a second opinion. I will attach a link to the site as I cannot save the picture. Out of these, which is the best one to buy? Who is the maker? And do you think this was ever issued?1-http://www.emedals.ca/catalog.asp?item=GRN3352-http://www.emedals.ca/catalog.asp?item=GRN314 (No authenticity. Is it remake?)3-http://www.emedals.ca/catalog.asp?item=GRN285 4-http://www.emedals.ca/catalog.asp?item=GRN248 5-http://www.emedals.ca/catalog.asp?item=GRN240 6-http://www.emedals.ca/catalog.asp?item=GRN163 Thanks for the help with this.Tim
Gordon Williamson Posted July 1, 2009 Posted July 1, 2009 Wouldn't recommend 1, 2, 3 or 5. Genuine, but late war types not particularly desirable and very highly priced for what they are.Number 4 is a Schwerin / Steinhauer type, nice but quite expensive.Without any doubt the best one is number 6, a lovely Juncker piece in fine condition and priced more cheaply than Number 4 which is a pig ugly badge anyway.

I am going with number 6. Just ordered it. The maker of this piece is Juncker? And any idea if this was actually issued? If not, it is from WW2 right? I'm very new to collecting things like this. Reason being is that I am a Scuba diver and recently dove a sunken U-Boat.Thanks again.
Gordon Williamson Posted July 1, 2009 Posted July 1, 2009 Tim,You made a good choice, this type badge is in my opinion by far the most attractive of all the various U-Boat Badge makers.Yes, this type is generally accepted as being made by Juncker. They are never maker marked. Juncker rarely marked their naval badges (for some reason their Coastal Artillery badge being an exception). It is certainly a good WW2 piece. They sometimes turn up in real mint condition, the level of wear and toning suggest that it could well have actually been issued ( as opposed to having been "liberated" from some storeroom by allied troops at the end of the war.Interesting to hear about your dive. Which boat did you dive on?
hazmatmess Posted July 14, 2009 Author Posted July 14, 2009 Sorry it took me a while to answer. I have dove on the U-853. It was amazing. Only dove on it once but I plan to get there again this summer. In September, I am taking a trip to dive on the U-352 or U-85.
