leigh kitchen Posted October 2, 2009 Share Posted October 2, 2009 (edited) 5 Corps was first formed during WWI as part of Third Army Reformed in June 1940, 5 Corps was part of the North West Expeditionary Force in Norway, 1940. A vikng long boat was chosen to commemorate this service in Norway. In 1942 the Corps left Home Forces & joined First Army in North Africa, it took part in Operation Torch as part of First Army, & fought in the Tunisian Campaign, invasion of Italy & as part of 8th Army in the Italian Campaign, including at Monte Cassino, The Gothic Line, & the Spring Offensive of 1945. 5 Corps remained with 8th Army in 15th Army Group until the end of the war.
