Awarded: To all ranks of the armed forces and civil guard for faithful service. Grades: Now 4 (Grand Cross, Star, Commander and Knight), the Commander grade being added since the order's inception. Apart from changes to the crown, the insignia has changed little if at all since 1814. Here is some of the current insignia, according to the latest revision of the statutes in 2000. Hugh Posted October 7, 2009 Posted October 7, 2009 Hermengildo was one of the first medals I ever got while on midshipman cruise in Vigo, Galicia in 1958. Can't remember, but it probably cost about $1 US. Nice to see an old friend. Thanks, Megan. H
