jasmor58 Posted October 25, 2009 Posted October 25, 2009 Would appreciate any help or information on this officer.Major H.S. Rowan. C.O. 154 Siege Battery Royal Garrison Artillery 1916-19. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Jasmor58
Guest Rick Research Posted October 25, 2009 Posted October 25, 2009 Why? What have you got? What do you already know? I'm always insatiably curious about any kind of named "person" research project where it is possible I might have something tucked away in the South Tower or wherever, but advice in general to the wide world when asking for help on research PLEASE state up front 1) what you've got (pictures would be nice. Very nice. Personally, I am always Best Motivated By VISUAL STIMULI. ) and 2) let us know everything you already have as clues and 3) what else you are looking for. Couldn't count the number of times I've burrowed into hours of work only to be informed "oh, I already knew THAT." (THOSE persons go on The List From Which There Is No Return... ) He was not in the 1935 British edition of "Who's Who?"-- unless his name was Rowan-Robinson.
jasmor58 Posted October 26, 2009 Author Posted October 26, 2009 I do not have very much information on this officer. His name appears in the History of 154 Siege Battery RGA by Capt M C. Walker. I know he was awarded the Military Cross and that his first name could be Hugh. I am researching this Battery as my father in law served with it and was awarded the Military medal. I have info on Capt. Walker and a 2nd Lt Greene, but very little on Major Rowan. I appear to have come up with nothing on this man on the internet. That is why I have made this request. I know the information available is very little to go on . Any assistance in help with direction would be appreciated. Jasmor58
leigh kitchen Posted October 26, 2009 Posted October 26, 2009 Possibly still alive & living in London WC in 1939?
leigh kitchen Posted October 26, 2009 Posted October 26, 2009 "Personally, I am always Best Motivated By VISUAL STIMULI". Like all men then - I've tried to explain to the wife that it's a a proven man thing, can't help it, it's the visual rather than the emotional.)
jasmor58 Posted October 26, 2009 Author Posted October 26, 2009 Thanks to all who have responded. However, I am not sure that this is the man in question. Since my last post I have discovered that his name was definately Hugh. Learned this from a Marriage announcement in the Times. "Major H. S. Rowan and Mrs. S.E.Blair. The marriage took plaace quietly in London yesterday between major Hugh S.Rowan , of Windyhill, Kilmalcolm .and Mrs Sheila Blair, of Fosseys, Great Bricknell, widow of Mr. Malcolm Reginald Blair" Thanks again. leigh kitchen Posted October 26, 2009 Posted October 26, 2009 Would that be this one - 1952? Name: Hugh S Rowan Spouse: Blair Marriage: Jan-Feb-Mar 1952 - Westminster, Middlesex Quite a few Hugh S Rowans getting spliced over the years. Looking at this MIC, (the address on the back)this could be your man in the 1901 Scotland Census. I have'nt checked age or anythng else yet: Name: Hugh S Rowan Birth: abt 1891 - Greenock, Renfrewshire Residence: Greenock, Greenock West, Renfrewshire
leigh kitchen Posted October 26, 2009 Posted October 26, 2009 (edited) As "emblems" are mentioned on the MIC, perhaps he got a MID - check The London Gazette? Edited October 26, 2009 by leigh kitchen

leigh kitchen Posted October 27, 2009 Posted October 27, 2009 There you go, good stuff. How firm is the Hugh S Rowan identification re the marriage?
jasmor58 Posted October 27, 2009 Author Posted October 27, 2009 leigh, It looks good to me. I now have a not from the times which states. "Times notice Feb 8th. 1952 of marriage at Kings Chapel of Savoy. Between Mr John Evelyn Pasmore only son of the late C.E. Pasmore and Mrs D.M. Pasmore of Fosseys, Great Brickhill, Bucks and Miss Elizabeth Gordon Rowan only daughter of Maj.Hugh S. Rowan of Windyhill, Kilmalcolm, Renfrewshire and the late Mrs Dorothy Rowan. Reception at the Savoy." Look at the addresses. I guess that this is where Major Rowan met Shiela... at his daughter's wedding. This is building into quite a proflie on the man in question. Jasmor58
